Florence Broussard

August 9, 1919 — December 20, 2010

Pecan Island - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, December 22, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pecan Island for Florence Olivia Broussard of Pecan Island, who passed away peacefully Monday evening, December 20, 2010 after ninety-one years of life.

She will be laid to rest at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery with Reverend Keith Landry officiating the services.

Florence was born in Grand Chenier, Louisiana on August 9, 1919. She moved to Pecan Island as a child, and graduated from Pecan Island High School. She then graduated from SLI in Lafayette and became a schoolteacher. She taught in Pierre Part, Hackberry, and Pecan Island.

While teaching, she met the love of her life and married Stephen Preston Broussard of Pecan Island on December 21, 1946 following a courtship of letters. The two lived together on Pecan Island, growing gardens and living off the land with their fourteen children. Florence and Stephen shared a love of God, family and friends, and laughter.

Florence, together with Stephen, endured the hardships that come with life on Pecan Island. When Hurricane Audrey made landfall in June of 1957, the Broussard family suffered greatly when they lost four children in the storm. Florence’s faith and strength were tested, but never were broken.

Florence remained active until her last days, dancing waltzes and tending to her gardens and chickens. She became involved in Senior Olympics in 2003, and had won over 100 gold medals by 2010. She was especially proud of her medals in javelin, shot put, and discus.

Florence was the proud mother of fourteen children, seven of whom survived her. She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Hamilton and her husband John; her daughter, Beatrice Bagwell and her husband Richard; her son Michael Broussard, and his wife Sherry; her daughter Melicia Broussard; her son Johnny Broussard, and his wife Judy; her daughter Estelle Winter; and her son Martin Broussard, and his wife Robin. She is also survived by seventeen grandchildren, and eighteen great grandchildren.

She has gone to heaven to meet her loving husband, Stephen Preston Broussard, and seven of their children, Warren Michael, Errol Brent, Preston Stephen, Stephen Anthony, Veronic Ann, Estelle Catherine, and Lerissa Ann. Also waiting for her are her parents, Sosthene and Melicia Broussard, and her brother, Harris Broussard.

Florence’s lifelong courage and resilience brought admiration and love from her family and friends until her last breath, and her dignity in life will never be forgotten.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 from 4 p.m. until services on Wednesday, with a rosary being prayed in Florence’s honor at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
