Murphy John "Bill" Domingues, Sr.

Abbeville—Funeral services will be held Monday, January 31, 2011 at 9:00 a.m. at Vincent Funeral Home of Abbeville honoring the life of Murphy John Domingues, Sr., 98.


He will be laid to rest at St. Mary Magdalen Cemetery with Fr. Ed Degeyter officiating the services.


Murphy John "Bill" Domingues finished his race to win the blessings of Heaven's reward for successfully completing the long but memory-filled Course on Life's Track. A triumphant time of work, competitive sports, local and world travel and most of all, happy times with family and friends surely earned for him at the end, yet another blue ribbon with another gold medal on Thursday, January 27, 2011 in Dayton, Tennessee, at the age of 98 years young.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Rosemary Aycock of Lafayette, Louisiana, Two sons, Murphy John, Jr. wife Linda, and Richard Sidney, wife Barbara, and daughter Frances Ruth Nevils. He is also survived by one nephew, Simon LeBlanc and wife Adrienne, as well as seven grandchildren and seventeen great- grandchildren who cherished their beloved, "Pops".

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Hazel Smith, and parents, Oleus Domingues and Margaret Collins, and five sisters and two brothers.

Born in Abbeville, Louisiana, Bill spent many years in Alexandria, Lake Charles and Lafayette. Forty-four years of work with Bell South Telephone Company, upon retirement were followed by over twenty years of daily practice on the track at RED'S preparing to participate in the state and national Senior Olympic Games. Through concentrated preparation he successfully set championship records in Track and Field Events that stand today to live on unbroken in State and National Competition.

Murphy was named a Living Legend at the Erath Museum and was also elected to the Abbeville High School Hall of Fame, and the State of Louisiana Senior Sports Hall of Fame. Beginning in 1968 and until three years ago, Murphy participated regularly with winning results in all local, State and National Senior Games Track and Field competition.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Abbeville, 209 S. St. Charles Street, on Sunday, January 30, 2011 from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.; Monday, January, 31, 2011 from 8:00 a.m. until time of services.

Memorial donations in his name may be made to the Louisiana Senior Games Association and the National Elderhostel Program.
