Jules Edward Duhon

LEROY - Jules Duhon passed away peacefully on February 10, 2011, at Lafayette General Hospital, at the age of 89. He was born November 18, 1921 in Maurice, Louisiana.

Visitation will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Leroy on Sunday, February 13, 2011, from 4-7 p.m., with a Rosary at 6 p.m., and Monday, February 14, 2011 from 8 a.m. until the service at 11 a.m. Burial will be in St. Alphonse Cemetery, Maurice, Louisiana.

He is survived by his only child, June Duhon DeBaillon, of Maurice, her husband, Paul N. DeBaillon , and his three grandchildren: Conrad B. DeBaillon of Dallas, Texas, Philip T. DeBaillon of New Orleans, and Elizabeth N. DeBaillon of Maurice.


Jules was preceded in death by his wife, Eula June Terrebonne Duhon, with whom he shared more than 50 years, his parents, Etienne Duhon and Elizabeth Baker Duhon, and his 16 siblings: Preston Duhon, Etienna Duhon, Maxie Duhon, Althea Duhon, Isabelle Duhon Mhire, Gussie Duhon Hebert, Lucille D. Bernard, Robert Duhon, Gordy Duhon, Edlar Duhon, Adolph Duhon, Elus Duhon, Corinne Duhon Broussard, Anaise Duhon Dartez, Nella Duhon Mhire, and Louise Duhon Simon.


He earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Southwestern Louisiana Institute of Liberal and Technical Learning (SLI), now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and his Master of Education from Louisiana State University Agricultural and Mechanical College. Jules also completed his 30+ hours toward his doctorate from the University of Southwestern Louisiana (USL), now UL.


Jules began his career as a teacher at Indian Bayou High School. During his more than 40 years as an educator in Vermilion Parish, he taught math and coached the boys’ basketball team at Indian Bayou High School, taught math at Vermilion Catholic High School and was the last principal of Maurice High School. Jules retired as the first principal of North Vermilion High School. He was involved in the process of consolidating the three high schools at Indian Bayou, Maurice, and Meaux, that formed the new school of North Vermilion High School.


He recorded his thoughts about the process: “I was one of the first to advocate consolidation of schools in Vermilion Parish. It wasn’t a very popular idea at first. However, I think that it has improved the communities involved. It was an honor to be named the First Principal of North Vermilion High School. North Vermilion has an excellent curriculum which serves the students very well.”
He was a member of the Vermilion Parish Retired Teachers’ Association and the Vermilion Parish Principals’ Association, and was dedicated to serving in different capacities and garnered recognition for his service. Jules served as a USL (now UL) Rally Committee Member in 1981 and as President of the Vermilion Parish Retired Teachers Association from 1995 to 1997. In 1981 he was recognized by the Vermilion Principals’ Association for 39 years of service, and in 1987, he was recognized by Vermilion Catholic High School Faculty and Staff for service to Catholic Education.

Jules was a member of the Knights of Columbus Leroy Council 8843. Jules served in various positions and was recognized by the Council for his contributions to his community with several awards through the years. He was Membership Director, Deputy Grand Knight and Grand Knight. Additionally, he was Essay Contest Chairman for the Rev. A.J. Braquet Assembly. He received the Family of the Year Award for 1992-93, and was honored with the Pioneer Award in 1998. In 2000, Jules was the first recipient from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church to receive the Diocese of Lafayette Devoted Service Award.

Jules proudly served his country as a Private First Class in the United States Army as a Ground Aircraft Observer. While a member of the military, he qualified as a marksman, received the World War II Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and the American Theater Ribbon.

Pallbearers will be Paul N. DeBaillon, Conrad B. DeBaillon, Philip T. DeBaillon, Rex Bernard, Johnny Picard, and John E. Dugas, III.
