Dennis Simon

Mr. Simon graduated from Kaplan High School and attended SLI, where he went on to join the U.S. Air Force for four years. On his return to Kaplan, he opened Den's Confectionary, a popular hangout for teenagers at the time. He then opened an Insurance Agency as an Independent Agent, as well as, a Real Estate Agency. He was also a tax preparer. Mr. Simon developed property, including several subdivisions. Among the subdivisions developed were Coastal Heights, Country Heights and Greene Acres. He was in business for over sixty years. He was instrumental in the establishment of Maltrait Memorial Catholic School, along with his wife, Mrs. Tootsie, and Monsignor Berube. He also served as the first chairman of the board of directors at Abrom Kaplan Memorial Hospital. Outside of work, Mr. Simon enjoyed being outdoors, especially using his motor grader and backhoe.
He is survived by four daughters, Lynn Simon Toups of Kaplan, Velma "Teeta" Simon Vincent and her husband, Dale of Kaplan, Marsha Simon Greene of Lafayette, and Martha Simon Suire and her husband, Billy of Katy, Texas; thirteen grandchildren, Gina and her husband, Patrick Trahan, Robby Toups and his wife, Karen, Shawri and her husband, Gary Landry, Rachael and her husband, Marty Lormand, Dana and her husband, Kevin Trahan, Mary Ellen Vincent, Colby Suire and his wife, Tori, Heath Suire and his wife, Maranda, Andrew Suire, Sonny Greene, Seth Greene and his wife, Debbie, Sy Greene and his wife, Crissy and Steven Greene; and twenty-two great grandchildren, Emily Trahan, Payton Trahan, Trey Toups, Madison Landry, Molly Landry, Mary-Claire Landry, Gabrielle Lormand, Rhemy Lormand, Rhys Lormand, Alexandra Trahan, Cale Trahan, Nate Trahan, Asa Suire, Carter Suire, Caroline Suire, Sonnie Rae Greene, Sammie Faye Greene, Gracie Greene, Sophie Greene, Regan Greene, Andre Greene, and Eden Greene.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Velma "Tootsie" Touchet Simon; parents, Eustache Simon and the former Olive Petry; and his sister, Celine Simon Hebert.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Kaplan, 300 N. Eleazar Avenue, on Wednesday, March 9, 2011 from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. with a rosary being prayed at 7 p.m.; Thursday, March 10,2011 from 8 a.m. until the procession departs for church.
