Alton "Tan" Romero Sr.

March 31, 1919 — March 13, 2011

Kaplan—Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Vincent Funeral Home - Kaplan honoring the life of Alton Romero, 91, who marched on to meet his Lord and Savior on Sunday, March 13, 2011, from his residence in Kaplan. He will be laid to rest at Kaplan Cemetery with his nephew, Reverend Kendal Faulk officiating the services.

He was born in Kaplan, Louisiana to Joseph and Rosa Breaux Romero. He was the middle child of thirteen Romero children. He was an excellent athlete and won many titles in track and boxing during his military career. He served our country proudly as a corporal in the Army Air Force during the Southern Philippines Liberation in World War II receiving the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars. "Mr. Tan", as he was known, was a Vermilion parish sheriff deputy for twenty years. In 1986 he was elected to serve as Kaplan Chief of Police where he remained until 1994. In addition to his political career, he farmed rice and cattle, as well as, being an avid thoroughbred race horse owner and trainer. Mr. Tan loved his city, Kaplan with great zeal, as well as his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He lived a very full and eventful life. Yes, HE REALLY LIVED.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Linda Traylor Romero and two children by a previous marriage, Margaret Susan "Peggy" Romero and Alton "Buzz" Romero Jr., MD, both of Kaplan; three grandsons and their families, Dr. Jeremy Romero and his wife, Tricia (children, Landon and Lene' Claire) of Abbeville, William Romero and his wife, Julie (children, Emmie, Wyatt, AnnaJane and Andrew) of Kaplan and Kevin Romero and his wife, Mandi (baby expected in April) of Kaplan; two granddaughters and their families, Ashley Reynolds Goolsby and her husband, Ross (son, Grayson) of Austin, Texas and Robin Stewart Goins of Leesville; two sisters, Della Romero Bourque of Kaplan and Olite Romero Ramsey and her husband, Jim of West Monroe; and many nieces and nephews. Along with his family coupled with his wonderful friends, his presence will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by a son, Ignace "Rusty" Romero; his parents; and siblings, Lucille Romero Suire, Edmae Romero Dubois, Howard Romero, Mayo Romero, Harry Romero, Olivia "Tootsie" Romero Marceaux, Wallace "Coon" Romero, David "Goat" Romero, Ignace "Boy" Romero and Leroy "Pamp" Romero.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Kaplan, 300 N. Eleazar Avenue, on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 from 10 a.m. until services.
