Ruby Bohrer Welborn

January 17, 1920 — June 17, 2011

Abbeville— A resident of Abbeville, Mrs Ruby Welborn passed away at the age of 91, at her home with her family at her side. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 20, 2011 at St. Mary Magdalen honoring her life.

She will be laid to rest at St. Mary Cemetery with Fr. Scott DesOrmeaux officiating the services. Serving as pallbearers will be Ray “Trey” Dugal III, Eric Dugal, Jonathan d’Augereau, Shawn d’Augereau, Micheal Rodriguez and Ryan Frederick. Honorary pallbearer will be Ryan Poche’.

Ruby was a very loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Her greatest joy in life was to have her family with her all the time. She enjoyed cooking for her family and friends as well as going to the casino.


Ruby worked at the midway restaurant with her father, Harry Bohrer and her late husband, Raymond Rodriguez, in the late 40’s and early 50’s. She also opened the first toy store in Abbeville, called Ruby’s Toy Land, where she sold the first Barbie dolls in Vermilion Parish. Later she opened a coffee shop at Abbeville General Hospital, were she worked for years, befor turning it over to her sister, Ester Bohrer. She later opened a restaurant in Intracoastal City with her second husband, John Welborn, called John and Ruby’s. Ruby retired at the age of 80, but she will always be known for her hamburger steaks and club sandwiches.


She is survived by her husband, John Welborn; two sons, Roddy Rodriguez and wife Joan and Rudy Rodriguez and wife Dionne; four daughters, Charlotte Rodriguez Smith and husband Bill, Connie Rodriguez Delcambre and husband Brent, Gwen Rodriguez Dugal and husband Ray and Silissa Rodriguez d’Augereau and husband Brent; brother, Benny Bohrer and wife Jane; sister Ester Bohrer; seventeen grandchildren and twenty one great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Teneal Bohere; and her first husband, Raymond Rodriguez.

The family would like to thank hospice nurses, Julia, Judith, Carolyn and Vanessa.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Abbeville, 209 S. St. Charles Street, on Sunday, June 19, 2011 from 2:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m. The family will reopen on Monday, June 20, 2011 from 8:00 a.m. until time of services.
