Lelia graduated from Mt. Carmel in Abbeville in 1934 and Louisiana
State University in 1938 with a degree in education. She taught for many
years in the Vermilion Parish school system.
Throughout her life, she was very active in civic projects in Abbeville
and Vermilion Parish. Lelia was a founding member of the Abbeville
Volunteer Tour Guides which provides free tours of the downtown area to
tourists and groups and was instrumental in incorporating the guides' Tour
of Homes as part of Abbeville's Annual Giant Omelette Festival. She led
efforts over the past decade to restore the Old St. Mary Magdalen Catholic
Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest. She served on the Police Jury's Building Committee for the Cooperative Extension Center and most recently
served on the Parish's Library Board of Control during an unprecedented
time when new libraries were constructed in Abbeville and Delcambre and
several other branches were completely renovated and modernized.
Her volunteer work did not go unrecognized by local, state and
national organizations as her walls were filled with certificates. She was
very proud of all her accolades, especially in 1997 when the State named her
the "Outstanding Individual Volunteer for the Louisiana's Main Street
Program", in 1998 when the National Society of the Daughters of the
American Revolution recognized her for "Excellence in Community
Service" and in 2002 when LSU acknowledged her efforts as a "Rural
Tourism Success Story".
Her commitment and involvement in these civic activies was only
surpassed by her devotion to her family and friends. She was a very kind
and loving person who will be sadly missed, but fondly remembered for the
joy she brought to so many people.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Lelia D.
Minvielle to the Library Fund, Mt. Carmel Elementary School, 405 Park Avenue, Abbeville, LA 70510.
