Dr. James Ray Nunez

Funeral services will be held Friday, November 18, 2011 at a 3:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church honoring the life of James Ray Nunez, 90, who died Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at.

He will be laid to rest at St. Mary Magdalen Cemetery with Reverend William C. Blanda officiating the services.

Dr. James Ray Nunez passed away peacefully at home with his family at his side. He is the son of the late Felix Joseph Nunez and Mary Goldie Boudreaux Nuez and husband of the late Agnes Pietrowski Nunez.

A native of Abbeville, he attended Mt. Carmel Elementary, graduated from Abbeville High School and went on to LSU where he completed his medical degree. In 1944, he accepted an internship at Christ Hospital in Hoboken, New Jersey, where he met and married his wife, who was a member of the United States Cadet Corps and a student nurse.

Serving in both the army and navy during WWII, he was stationed as a medical officer on the USS Shasta and later decommissioned ships in Seattle, WA. He practiced medicine in Vermilion Parish from 1946 - 1999. In 1950 he had a pediatric residency at hotel Dieu and Charity Hospital in New Orleans. During his medical practice, he served as Chief of Staff at Abbeville General Hospital, opened the Children's Clinic, was the physician for Headstart, and was honored as a Pioneer of Medicine by the Abbeville General Hospital Board of Commissioners. He was also a charter member of the Kiwanis Club, a member of the Knights of Columbus, and served as Commodore in the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Dr. Nunez had lifelong interests in science, history, classical architecture, music, photography,electronics, boating, furniture restoration and he read extensively. He spent as many hours as were possible sharing these interests with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He is survived by his sister, Dolores Nunez Mille Godchaux(Abbeville) and his brother, Charles Rene Nunez (Abbeville); his children, Denise Marie Nunez (Alsea,(OR), Sherrie deLatour (Lafayette, LA), James Ray Nunez, Jr.,"Jim"(Hollywood, CA),Claire Louise Nunez Aderholdt (BigFoot, TX), and Lisa Nunez Irion (Lafayette,LA) his grandchildren Benjamin Badeaux, Nicole Badeaux Thomas, Sarah Badeaux McKinnies, Steven Badeaux, Jacques deLatour,Armand deLatour, and John Irion III, and five great-grandchildren.

The Nunez family would like to express particular gratitude to those who were supportive of him and his family. Eva Credeur, Rita Reaux, Jeanette Nolan Johnson, Dr. Weston Miller, Peggy Vallot and Georgia Jordan of Caring Touch Home Care, Debbie White and St. Joseph Hospice, Dr. Kelly Cobb, Winnie Trahan, Mary Morgan, Dr. Powlin Manuel, Fr. Marshall Larivierre, and Jamie Hinson, the staff and his colleeagues at Abbeville General Hospital, and St. Mary Magdalen Church.
