Tony Guarino was born in Abbeville, Louisiana, on February 24, 1917, to Salvatore “Sam” Guarino and Jennie LaBruzzo Guarino. He attended Abbeville High School and served in the United States Army during World War II.
Tony worked with his father in the blacksmith shop of Sam Guarino and Son for most of his adult life. In that capacity he served area farmers and oil companies as a metalworker and craftsman, making and repairing parts for farm equipment, constructing stretchers for nutria trappers, and doing welding in oil fields and in the blacksmith shop. He also designed and made beautiful ornamental wrought iron objects, such as indoor and outdoor furniture, gates, and railings. He spent much of his leisure time working in his vegetable garden behind the blacksmith shop. He was also a great cook. Stray dogs and cats recognized a kind and generous friend in Tony, who could never resist feeding those animals, even when he found them on highways and country roads.
Survivors include his sisters, Rita Guarino and Mary Ann Guarino of Abbeville; his stepson Gary Theall and his wife Sandra of Abbeville; his stepson Carl Theall of California; his niece Clevie Thibodeaux of Erath; his nephew, Samuel Thibodeaux, D.V.M. and his wife Sonia Cahanin Thibodeaux of Erath; a step grandniece, Kourtney Blythe Thibodeaux; and a step great grandniece, Anna Leigh Klaire Thibodeaux.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Enid Smith Guarino; his sisters, Josephine Guarino and Elizabeth “Bessie” Guarino Thibodeaux; his infant sister, Laura Guarino; his stepson Ned Theall; and his brother-in-law, Cleve Thibodeaux.
The family is grateful to Kenneth “Keno” Perry, Paulette Levine, and Sylvia Willis. These wonderful caregivers were loving, kind, and patient, and they enriched Tony’s life in a multitude of ways.
