Eustis Meaux

Abbeville— Funeral services will be held for Joseph "Eustis" Meaux, age 84, at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Abbeville on Thursday, March 8, 2012 celebrated by Father Chester Arceneaux and Father Kenneth Mayne. Eustis passed away on March 7, 2012 after a battle with cancer. Burial will be at St. Paul Cemetery immediately following services.

Mr. Meaux was born on March 24, 1927 in Leroy. He lived most of his life in Abbeville, where he and his wife Beulah owned and operated Eustis Meaux’s Grocery until his retirement in 1986. In his spare time, he loved spending time with his family, gardening, dancing, woodworking and caring for his beloved dogs. He was an avid boxing fan and enjoyed volunteering as a barber to cut hair for the residents of local nursing homes. A devout Catholic, who lived his faith also served as a usher at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Abbeville. He attended Cursillo #6 in Prairie Ronde loved reciting the Rosary, still attending Ultrea and participating in weekly mass.


Eustis is survived by his children Glenda Lewis and husband Glenn of San Antonio, TX; Ray Meaux and wife Elsie of Lafayette; Stanley “Shooky” Meaux and wife Donnie of Abbeville; Tony Meaux and wife Diane of Abbeville; Arnold “Wayne” Meaux and wife Rachel of Abbeville; and Angela Hebert and husband Joseph of Maurice. He is also survived by his sister Joyce Simon and husband Roland of Abbeville, as well as brothers Dudley Meaux and wife Gladys of Abbeville; Leo Meaux and wife Annette of Lafayette; and half-brothers Carl “Ophe” Meaux and wife Kelly of Chattanooga, TN , John Dean Meaux Sr. and wife Patricia of Lafayette. Eustis was lovingly known as “Pop” to his 13 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Beulah, father Ophe Meaux, mother Eldora Menard, stepfather Oliphiade Bourque, and brother William “Bill” Meaux, all of Abbeville.

Pallbearers will be Glenn Lewis, Joey Hebert, grandson’s Shaun Lewis, Eric Meaux, Brock Meaux, and Joshua Meaux. Honorary pallbearers are granddaughters Andrea Romig, Lisa Soileau, Kerri Haydel, Carmen Miller, Lacey Meaux, Bridget Meaux, Alana Meaux, Lauren Hebert, and Emily Hebert.

Eustis’ family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to Dr. Michael Cain and the staff at Lafayette General Medical Center, Hospice of Acadiana, caretakers Billy Meaux, Warren Meaux, and Mrs. Ruby Pierce, as well as Eustis’ close friend Mrs. Marie Trahan for providing him with comfort, companionship, and strength as he faced his battle with cancer. Your presence and efforts gave him great support and comfort in his final day’s with dignity and the knowledge that he was loved and would not have to go through his struggle alone.

Relatives and friends are welcome at Vincent Funeral Home in Abbeville for visitation on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m.; Thursday, March 8, 2012, from 8:00 a.m. until 3:45 p.m. when the procession will depart for the church.
