Jane "Janie" Chapman

November 7, 1972 — April 23, 2012

GUEYDAN—When we remember Janie, we recall a sprinkle of freckles, a glint of sunset in her hair, her penetrating blue eyes, and her bubbling laughter. She had an indomitable spirit, which enfolded her family, her friends, her pets, and her colleagues. That spirit served her well when she worked for the office of the District Attorney, helping citizens in need. She adored animals and surrounded herself with them. Janie and her animals shared a bond of unconditional love, and it was a beautiful thing to see.

Janie visited her home in Gueydan often, and recuperated from heart surgery there. She delighted in her nephew, Connor, and was teaching him to draw. She anticipated her time with him enthusiastically. She loved to surprise him with small gifts every time she saw him.

Janie fought her illness with God's help and a powerful determination. She made several amazing comebacks. The staff at Lafayette General Hospital was generous with their time, their knowledge, and moral support. The family wished to thank the nursing staff of ICU and the second floor, and a special thanks to Dr. Luis Saenes, who never gave up hope.

Her survivors include Monica Guillory, her dear friend; her mother and stepfather, Beth Hardee Bertrand and John Earl Bertrand; her father, Rick Chapman; her stepsister and brother-in-law, Laurine Bertrand Boudreaux and Tobie Boudreaux, and their son, Connor O'Neil Boudreaux; and her stepbrother, Ted Bertrand. Other beloved survivors include her beloved uncles and aunts, Buster and Angie Hardee, Cindy and Kent Richard, and Jeri Chapman. Janie shared a special love for her cherished cousin, Libby Richard Mouton. She thought of Libby as her little sister.

Janie was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Russell Gauthier; cousin, Amy Chapman Troxell; her maternal grandparents, Luther and Hannah Jane Hardee; and her paternal grandparents, Warren and Jean Chapman.

Janie's final services were officiated by Father Jason Vidrine. Theresa Campbell sang the three selections entitled, In the Garden, Ave Maria, and Song of Angels. Bible readings were given by her friend, Paul Maclean, from Ecclesiastes 3, John 14, and Joshua 1 and Janie's aunt, Jeri Chapman, gave a moving and insightful tribute to Janie. Pallbearers were John Bertrand, Buster Hardee, Kent Richard, Phil Boudreaux, William Hardee, and Wyatt Hardee. Interment was at the Gueydan Cemetery.

The family asks that any donations be made to: Acadiana Cares, 809 Martin Luther King Drive, Lafayette, LA 70501 or to St. Peter the Apostle Church, 603 Main Street, Gueydan, LA 70542.

Janie's funeral arrangements were handled by James Sherman at Vincent Funeral Home. The family wishes to thank James for his guidance and special kindness.

Janie died on April 23, 2012. She was thirty-nine years old.
