Gueydan—Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 25, 2012 at a 12:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Peter the Apostle Roman Catholic Church honoring the life of Manson James Saltzman, 77, who died Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at his residence after a long, valiant battle with cancer. He will be laid to rest at Gueydan Cemetery with Reverend Jason Vidrine officiating the services. Pallbearers leading him to his final resting place are Gordon Saltzman, Patricia Heard, Toby Saltzman, Tim Heard, Chris Miller, and David Aymond. Honorary pallbearers are Dominick Aymond, Daniel Saltzman, Michael Saltzman, Dr. Michael Cain, Dr. Stephen Salopek, Dr. Jon LeLeux, Dr. Ed Breaux, and Dr. Weston Miller.

The youngest of three children, Manson graduated from Gueydan High School in 1952 and began rice farming. Shortly thereafter he began his career as a roughneck, joined the services of Odeco then Marathon Oil in 1977 until his retirement in 1992. He became a Marathon drilling consultant until 1997 then consulted for Hilcorp Energy until 2009.

His political interest began early in life listening to local and parish topics on the knee of his grandfather. In 1952, while still in high school, Manson stumped in French-speaking south Louisiana with Senator Dudley J. “Cousin” LeBlanc for the unsuccessful Democratic runoff election of gubernatorial candidate Carlos Spaht and his lieutenant governor running mate, John J. McKeithen. In 1963, at age 28, he became the youngest elected Police Juror in the state. He served on the Jury for 12-1/2 years and was elected as Vice-President and Finance Committee Chairman. He was elected to the LPJ Association Board of Directors, The National Oil and Gas Industrial County Board in Washington, DC and appointed to the Coastal Resources Board by Governor Edwin W. Edwards. In 1980, he was elected Mayor of Gueydan, a position he held for 4 full terms plus one year of a special election term.

He served on the Louisiana Municipal Gas Association Executive Board as Second Vice-President of District G, the LMGA Gas Purchasing Committee and was a member of TRIAD, Vermilion Parish Domestic Abuse and the Abbeville Chamber of Commerce. Until his death, he was Alderman for the town of Gueydan. He served a community that he loved and took pride in. It can honestly be said that he never met a stranger. High on his enjoyment list were his beloved LSU Tigers, especially LSU Baseball, which he attended for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Anna Lee Breaux Saltzman of Gueydan; three children, Lucinda Rynott and her husband, Stan of Lafayette, Patricia Heard and her husband, Tim of Gueydan, and Gordon Saltzman and his wife, Danielle of Gueydan; six grandchildren, Ryan Aymond, Matthew Binet, Erin Broussard, Jenny Miller, Toby Saltzman, and Daniel Saltzman; and seven great grandchildren, Dominick Aymond, Olivia Aymond, Audrey Blair, Savannah Broussard, Aiden Broussard, Katelyn Saltzman, and Emma Saltzman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ida Adams and Doles Saltzman; and two brothers, Doris Joseph Saltzman and Joseph Andrus Saltzman.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Manson’s “best friends” and “favorite” nurses and doctors for their inexhaustible effort and compassion. Also deeply appreciated are Troy and Mia Duhon whose devotion, friendship and spiritual support were of tremendous comfort.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Gueydan, 311 Fourth Street, on Friday, August 24, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m.; Saturday, August 25, 2012 from 8:00 a.m. until the procession departs for church.
