Clarence Hebert

April 15, 1926 — November 12, 2007

Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 14, 2007 at an 11 :00 A.M. Mass of
Christian burial in St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church honoring the life of Clarence
Hebert, 81, who died November 12, 2007 at his residence surrounded by family.
He was laid to rest at St. Paul Cemetery with Father Greg Chauvin officiating the
services.
Clarence was born on April 15, 1926. He was one of twelve children born to Renoudet
"Beck" Hebert, Sr. and Noemie Hebert Hebert.
He attended school in Judice, La. He left school in the 4th grade to work on his fathers
farm for five years prior to entering the service. He assisted in planting, cultivating and
harvesting of cotton, corn, peas, potatoes, peanuts, hay and garden crops. He used mule
teams, and mule drawn plows for cultivating crops. He tended livestock and made
repairs on farm equipment, fences and buildings.
He entered the service on June 26, 1944 and served in the Army Company F, 309 TH
Infantry. While in the service he served four months in the AA Basic Training; eight
months as an ammunition handler; four months as a truck driver and seven months as a
cook. He was honorably discharged on June 14, 1946 and received the Good Conduct
Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
On July 26, 1947, our family started when he married Bernice LeBouef. From this
wonderful couple, our family has grown to consist of 4 children, 10 grandchildren, 17
great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren with 1 more on the way.
In the early years of their marriage, they ran a dairy farm for eighteen years. He also
worked for C.S. Steen's Syrup Mill, farmed rice and did carpentry work. On April 27,
1970 they opened a grocery store, Hebert's Superette that they operated for
approximately twenty years. During that time he cooked many suppers for their friends
on Friday and Saturday nights. After retiring from the grocery business, he worked on
the family farm raising cattle and baling hay with his son and grandsons.
He was in many organizations, the Woodmen of the World - Lodge #7 in Abbeville,
where he was a trustee for many years. He was awarded the Fraternal Spirit Award and
The Cook of the Year Award in 2000. He was a member of the Abbeville Lions Club
and was named Lion of the Year for 1990-1991. He was a lifetime member of the
American Legion and VFW. He was named state volunteer of the Year by the La. Nursing Home Association - Region III in 2002. In 2005, he volunteered along with
fellow Woodmen members to build a Habitat House in Abbeville, working in 106 degree
weather. He was always volunteering to cook for many organizations and was well
known for his good food. In 2007, he was named male honoree for Relay for Life.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Bernice LeBouef Hebert; one son, Lenis
and his wife Elaine Hebert; three daughters, Janice Hebert Broussard and her companion
Earl Meaux, Donna Hebert Miller and Carleen Hebert Frederick and her husband Craig;
six grandsons, Timmy Hebert, Troy and his wife Natalie Hebert, Toby and his wife Dawn
Hebert, Coy and his wife Michelle Miller and Chet and his wife Kimberly Miller and
Lane Frederick; four granddaughters, Samantha Simoneaux Dupuis and her husband
Jody, Nicole Broussard Steen, Jill Miller Gaspard and her husband Daniel and Victoria
Frederick; seventeen great-grandchildren; two great-great granddaughters and one great-
great grandchild on the way; two brothers, J.C. Hebert of Picayune, Mississippi and
Renoudet "Buck" Hebert, Jr. of Lockport; and three sisters, Leona and her husband
Laurant Mire of Lafayette, Anna Mae and her husband Cliff Champagne and Lula Mae
and her husband Nolan Simoneaux of Raceland.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Renoudet, Sr. and Noemie Hebert; paternal
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Amede Hebert; maternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Ignace
Hebert; three brothers, Huey, Wilson and Dallas Hebert; and three sisters, Eta "Sis" H.
Frederick, Delta H. Montet and Stuna H. Durio.
Pallbearers were his grandsons, Timmy, Troy and Toby Hebert, Coy and Chet Miller and
son-in-law, Craig Frederick. Honorary pallbearers was his son, Lenis Hebert, youngest
grandson, Lane Frederick, brothers, J.C. Hebert, Renoudet "Buck" Hebert and friend,
Wilsie "Buck" Connor.
Gift bearers were his granddaughters - Samantha Simoneaux Dupuis, Nicole Broussard
Steen, Jill Miller Gaspard and Victoria Frederick.
The Hebert Family would like to thank - Dr. Briar, Dr. LeBouef, the Staff of Hospice of
Acadiana and all the family and friends who kept him and our family in their prayers.
