Russell R. Gaspard

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, December 18, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church honoring the life of Russell R. Gaspard, 75 who died peacefully Saturday, December 8, 2007 at his residence in Abbeville.
St. Mary Magdalen will open at 10:00 a.m. for a gathering of family and friends, with a rosary to be prayed at 10:30 a.m..
Russell was born in the Fourth Ward of Vermilion Parish and was a lifetime resident of Abbeville. He graduated from Abbeville High School, and he attended the University of Southwest Louisiana and the United States Naval Academy Prep School. He served in the United States Navy and was a Korean War Veteran.
Russell enjoyed a lifetime of public service including serving as Registrar of Voters of Vermilion Parish, Director of the State Board of Voter Registration, President of the Louisiana Registrar of Voter Registration, Clerk of Court of Vermilion Parish, State Director of Louisiana Clerks of Court Association, President of the International Association of Clerks, Recorders, Election Officials and Treasurers, Member of the International Association of Assessing Officers, Member of the Louisiana Tax Commission, Chairman of the Louisiana Tax Commission, Chairman of the Vermilion Parish Republican Party, President of the Abbeville Rotary Club, President of the Abbeville Softball League, Grand Knight of the Abbeville Knights of Columbus Council #2281, President of Vermilion Catholic High School Boosters Club, Housing Director of the Vermilion Parish Civil Defense, Evangeline Area Cubmaster and Scoutmaster, Member of L ' Association des Hebert du Monde, Chairman of the International Hebert Family Reunion held in Abbeville during the Congres Mondial, Co-founder and Member of the Abbeville Cultural and Historical Alliance, Founder and Member of the Acadian Center in St. Martinville, Member of the Louisiana Wetlands Association, Member of the Coastal Conservation Association, Member of the Vermilion Historical Society, Member of the Vermilion Arts Council, Member of the Louisiana Secretary of State's Archives Committee, Member of the Louisiana Historical Records Advisory Committee, Member of the Third Annual Committee for the Sunshine Foundation's "Sunshine for Kids Gala," and an early Committee Member of the Bishop's Charity Ball.
Some of Russell's interests were RV camping, traveling, antique car restoration, cultural preservation, and like all Cajuns loved to eat!
He is survived by wife, Laura, one son, two daughters, four grandchildren and one great- grandchild. They are Russell (Rusty) of San Francisco, California, Anne Gaspard and son, Jude Dore', Claire and husband, Danny Broussard and their children, Karen, Jerrod and Kirsten. Alaina Hamlett is his great-granddaughter. He is also survived by his sister, Eleanor and husband, Oswald Breaux, niece Bobbi Fontenot and nephews, Thad and Marty Theall.
He was preceded in death by his father, Louisiana State Senator RC. "Cliff' Gaspard, and his mother, Louisa Hebert; and by an infant son Richard Neil.
Russell's family would like to thank the following professionals for their expert care during his fight with cancer: Dr. Luis Meza and staff, Dr Frank Bacquet, Dr. Perry Stokes, Dr. Weston Miller, Dr. Jacque Noel, Dr. Henry Kaufman, Jr., and the staffs at Abbeville General, Lafayette General, Oncologics in New Iberia, Advanced Imaging of Lafayette, Acadiana Imaging Center of Lafayette and Dr. Corbett LeBouef and staff of Hospice of Acadiana.
