Jessie James Bergeron

April 17, 1937 — October 21, 2012

Abbeville— Jessie Bergeron was gifted to us in April of 1937 and became a man of the world. He sought his adventure by joining the United States Air Force as an airplane mechanic in 1955 fresh out of Abbeville High. After training, his first assignment was overseas in a place called Tachikawa Air Force Base Japan, where he met a beautiful young Japanese woman named Akemi, whom everyone calls Kim. They fell in love, even though he could not speak Japanese and she could not speak Cajun English or French. In the beginning, they were able to communicate…where no words were necessary. From there he spent the next 23 years moving with the Air Force to such places as: Las Vegas, Illinois, a small island called Okinawa, New Jersey, Kansas, Thailand, Arkansas, Yokota Japan, New Mexico, with periodic stops in Abbeville throughout this period.

Jessie retired from the Air Force in 1978, after 23 years. He chose to return to his roots in Abbeville, where he lived and worked for 22 years at Al George (AGI) until 2000. After his second retirement, he decided to move to California, where he spent 11 years enjoying the California sun. Then in 2012, he decided to return back to Louisiana. Jessie had a love for gardening and it showed. You could find him pickin’ his guitar and singing some country songs. His love of family and a good bar-b-q are in the hearts of every Cajun. Anyone lucky enough to have his baby back ribs had a mouth watering experience to enjoy.

During Jessie’s life adventure, he flourished in his marriage to his true love, Kim, who currently resides in Lafayette. One only needed to spend a few minutes with them to realize they genuinely liked each other’s company. He is also survived by his three children; Michael and his wife Rose, Tommy and his wife Masa, Angelic and her husband Bobby Eady, and four grandchildren; Kenneth and his wife Lea, Blake, Mikayla, and Ms. Jesse.

Jessie’s 75 year life was cut short after a two year battle with cancer. During the last few days a coma over took him. On the night of his death, his wife of 55 years kissed him good night, where to her surprise he opened his eyes and gazed upon her beautiful face then closed them and took his last breaths. Good night Jessie, you will be missed.

Jessie was taken on Oct 21, 2012. Private services will be held for family and friends.
