Santo Rizzuto

June 17, 1925 — October 24, 2012

Gueydan—Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 27, 2012 at a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Peter the Apostle Roman Catholic Church honoring the life of Santo Rizzuto, 87, who died Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at American Legion Hospital. He will be laid to rest at the Gueydan Cemetery with Reverend Jason Vidrine officiating the services.

Santo was an army veteran, serving from 1943-1946. He also served his community in several ways as a volunteer fireman, auxiliary policeman, housing project board member, little league coach, and Woodmen of the World member. He was a businessman for 35 years, operating a dry cleaning establishment from 1953-1988 along with his wife. He enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening, playing dominoes, and watching sports, especially the New York Yankees and Boston Celtics. He was a devout Catholic and a loving and caring husband, father and Pawpaw. He was endearingly referred to by his family as a "gentle giant". He was a gentle man in every way, never having a harsh or negative word for anyone or anything. He was a giant of a man, not in physical stature but in his big heart and kind character. He will be truly missed.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Edmae Woods Rizzuto of Gueydan; one son, Phil Rizzuto and his wife, Sandra K. of Berthoud, Colorado; two daughters, Charlene and her husband, Terry Benoit of Gueydan and Melissa and her husband, Glenn Richard of Crowley; one sister, Josephine Broussard of Gueydan; six grandchildren, Brent Rizzuto, Jennifer Searcy, Shelley Primeaux, Wendy Smith, Byron Richard, and Brandon Richard; and thirteen great grandchildren, Alex Rizzuto, Braeden Rizzuto, Garrison Searcy, Baylee Searcy, Reagan Smith, Gannon Smith, Ross Primeaux, Ella Primeaux, Lauryn Richard, Ava Richard, Ethan Richard, Reace Richard, and Rowhen Richard.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jasper Rizzuto and the former Rosa Giordano; both brothers, Andrew and Sam M. Rizzuto; and two sisters, Mary Boudreaux and Catherine Rizzuto.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Gueydan, 311 Fourth Street, on Friday, October 26, 2012 from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. with a rosary being prayed at 7 p.m.; Saturday, October 27, from 8 a.m. until 9:45 a.m. when the procession will depart for church.
