Lifelong Abbeville resident, Evelyn Fontana, died Tuesday January 15th following a lengthy illness. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Tony and her sister Helen Russo. She is survived by her 7 sons and their families: Anthony and Elise of Abbeville and their daughters Renee’ and Allyson, Carl and Lorain of Lafayette, Chris and April of Lafayette and their sons Wesley and Preston, Paul and Rose of Lafayette and their children Adrienne, Vincent, Samuel and Rachel, Francis and Sara of Houston and their children Peter, Amelia, Evelyn Joy and Michael, Robert and Lori of Yakima, WA and their children Steven, Clare, Mary, Kate, Andrew and Colleen, and John of Mandeville and his children Allyssa and Dominic. Evelyn is also remembered by nephews Butch Benoit and Rene “Rocky” Russo of Abbeville, Wade Russo of Boston, MA and nieces Annette Willis of Atlanta, GA and Angella Russo of New Orleans. A 50 year resident of St Mary Street, Evelyn will be remembered fondly by many friends and neighbors. Visitation is at Vincent Funeral Home, 209 St Charles St, Abbeville Monday January 21st 5 - 9 pm, rosary at 7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 am Tuesday January 22 at St Mary Magdalene Catholic Church followed by internment at St Paul’s Cemetery in Abbeville. Evelyn and her husband Tony were deeply committed to their church, the Catholic faith and to musical education. She devoted many years to teaching piano lessons in their home and as piano accompanist for numerous music productions and recitals at Mount Carmel Elementary and Vermillion Catholic High School. Following the death of her husband in 1988 Evelyn volunteered her time directing activities and programs at the Catholic Service Center in Abbeville serving the poor and needy of Vermilion Parish.
