Marie Agnes Martin Vaughan

Abbeville—Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 11, 2013 at Vincent Funeral Home - Abbeville honoring the life Marie Agnes Martin Vaughan, 90, of Lake Charles, went to meet her Lord on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at a local hospital after complications from a recent surgery.

Reverend Kenneth Mayne will officiate the services. A private family interment will be at St. Mary Magdalen Cemetery following cremation.

Marie was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana to Albert and Ulysia Martin. She attended and graduated from St. Charles Academy, where she played in the band. At graduation she was feted for being a charter member of the Lake Charles Symphony Orchestra. She began work in the theater at age 5 when she was in one of the school’s productions and thereafter appeared in many theater productions of her schools and those produced by Rosa Hart. After moving to Abbeville, she was active in the Abbey Theatre, appearing in over thirty productions and directing ten productions. She served in all official capacities during her 18 years on the Board of Directors.

Her vocational career as a legal secretary and court reporter began in 1938 under the tutorship of her sister, Lucy Collins. She worked in Calcasieu, Cameron and Vermilion Parishes until 2005, when she retired. She was a member of the Ladies Altar Society, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, the Garden Club and the Home Extension Club. She was an avid reader and loved playing cards, especially bridge.

She was an award-winning cook. Her recipes were published in many cookbooks, including the Betty Crocker Cookbook. She was also an accomplished painter for many years, and her paintings can be found in many public places in Calcasieu, Cameron and Vermilion Parishes.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Raphael Vaughan; and her six siblings.


She is survived by her two children, Leslie Kay Vaughan of Lake Charles, and Henry “Hank” Vaughan and wife Lee of Tigard, Oregon; two grandchildren, Rose and Jessica Vaughan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Abbeville, 209 S. St. Charles Street, on Friday, January 11, 2013 from 11:00 a.m. until time of service. A rosary will be prayed at 1:00 p.m.
