Kaplan—Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at Vincent Funeral Home - Kaplan honoring the life of Roland J. Hargrave, 77, who died Sunday, January 20, 2013 at Maison duMonde Living Center. He will be laid to rest at Kaplan Cemetery with Reverend Kendal Faulk officiating the services. Serving as pallbearers will be Brady Campbell, Ryan Campbell, Taylor Hargrave, Francis Meaux, Wilson Bouillion, and Sigmund Babineaux.

He was born in Kaplan on July 20, 1935 to Otis and Etta Hargrave. After graduating from Kaplan High School in 1954, he began his federal service in the U.S. Army, upon completing four years in the military. Roland enrolled at the University of Southwest Louisiana receiving his bachelor's degree in civil engineering in 1960. Roland began a 42-year career with the US Army Corps of Engineers New Orleans District in early 1961. He was instrumental in the construction of the Freshwater Bayou Locks, located south of Intracoastal City, Louisiana. The relationships he worked to develop over the many years with the local levee boards and local government helped to foster an excellent reputation for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in South Louisiana. Upon his retirement in 2004, he received the Commander’s Award for Public Service which is the fourth highest honor the United States Department of the Army can bestow upon a civilian. In 2010, he was inducted into the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers New Orleans District Gallery of Distinguished Employees. He was a member of the American Legion Lejeune- Boudreaux Post 271 for the past 42 years.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, May Hargrave; one son, David W. Hargrave and his wife, Christie Hargrave of Kaplan; one daughter, Kay Campbell and her husband, Errol Campbell of Kaplan; one sister, Ouida Meaux of New Iberia; four grandchildren, Brady Campbell and his fiancee, Shannon Frederick of Erath, Ryan Campbell and his wife, Angel Campbell of Kaplan, Taylor Hargrave and his fiancee, Lauren Baudoin of Lafayette, and Kasey Hargrave of Lake Charles; and three great grandsons, Gavin Cullen, and Gus Campbell.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Otis Hargrave and the former Etta Primeaux; and his brother, Lovelace Hargrave.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Kaplan, 300 N. Eleazar Avenue, on Monday, January 21, 2013 from 2 p.m. until 9 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m.; Tuesday, January 22, 2013 from 8 a.m. until services.
