Mahlen Matthew Meaux

Kaplan—Funeral services will be held Monday, March 4, 2013 at an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church honoring the life of Mahlen Matthew Meaux, 86, who died Saturday, March 2, 2013 at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center. He will be laid to rest at Kaplan Cemetery with Reverend William C. Blanda officiating the services.

Mr. Meaux was born in Kaplan, Louisiana to Frank Meaux and Paola Primeaux Meaux on November 23, 1926. He grew up in Kaplan attending school and in high school was the first recipient in a new program for Louisiana Boys State held at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. After high school, he started the pre-pharmacy program at Loyola University in New Orleans. While in school, he was drafted into the Navy during World War II. He was stationed in San Diego, California as a hospital corpsman; and also stationed later in Corpus Christi, Texas at the Naval Base Hospital as a pharmacy mate. After the war, he finished pharmacy school and in 1948 joined his father, Frank Meaux, who was also a pharmacist (and owner) at Meaux's Pharmacy. After settling into his business he met and married Goldie Harrington and they had eight children.

Mr. Meaux was a parishioner of Holy Rosary Cabrini Parish and served as an usher, a lector, and a lay minister. He was on the Church Parish Council and past Grand Knight and Fourth Degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 2913. He was also a member of the Lejeune- Boudreaux American Legion Post, the Kaplan Rotary Club, the Kaplan Lions Club, and the Krewe Chic-a-La-Pie. He served on the Board of Directors at Kaplan State Bank.

He is survived by four daughters, Janice M. Romero, Gerette M. Hebert and her husband Bill, Sheila M. Hebert and her husband Stan, and Tracy M. Chiasson and her husband Bruce; four sons, Reynold J. Meaux, Keith Meaux and his wife Helen, Craig J. Meaux and friend Gay, and Patrick Meaux and wife Julie; 21 grandchildren, Jeremy, William, and Kevin Romero, Kyle, Thomas, James, and Steven Meaux, Maisie Hargett, Craig Joseph, and Tyson Meaux, Rozlyn Cothran, Lance and Blake Hebert, Lindy and Nicholas Meaux, Noell and Reiss Hebert, Danielle and Andre Dubois, Emile and Olivia Chiasson; and nine great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife of 50 years, Goldie Marie Harrington Meaux.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations made to Maltrait Memorial Catholic School, Mount Carmel Catholic School, Vermilion Catholic High School, or St. Thomas More High School.

Mr. Meaux's family would like to thank all of his caregivers, Patricia Suby, Alberta "Bert" Rudd, Karen Evans, Hazel O'Brien, Shaketha Moore, Beverly Roche, and all previous caregivers.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Kaplan, 300 N. Eleazar Avenue, on Sunday, March 3, 2013 from 12 p.m. until 9 p.m. with a rosary being prayed at 6 p.m.; Monday, March 4, 2013 from 8 a.m. until the procession departs for the church.
