A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 21, 2008 at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church honoring the life of Gene C. Fontenot, Sr. age 69, who died Saturday, April 19, 2008 at Abbeville General Hospital. Interment will be in the Kaplan Cemetery with Reverend Greg Chauvin officiating. Gene was a great husband, father, grandfather and father in law. He enjoyed life to the fullest with his wife and family. Gene entered the United States Air Force right after graduating from high school. From 1956 to 1960, he was in the Air Police for his 4 years of service. After leaving the service, he worked at the Liberty Rice Mill in Kaplan. In 1962, he joined the Kaplan Police Department and served with them for 8 years. In 1970, he left Kaplan P.D. and joined the Abbeville Police Department and served until his retirement in 1986. While with both Police Departments, he attended many schools. He is survived by his wife, Beverly Ann LeBlanc Fontenot; 4 sons, Farrell and his wife Wilda, Carroll and his wife Priscilla, Gene Jr. and his wife Jamie, Roger and his wife Darlene; one brother, Leo Charles Fontenot; one sister, Beverly Jane Bertrand; 4 grandchildren Rachel Claire Fontenot, Jacob Jason Fontenot and wife Jennifer, Lacey Lynn Fontenot and Madisen Elizabeth Fontenot; 2 step grandchildren, Derek Dupuis and Lauren Dupuis and one great grandchild on the way. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Garrett Jude Fontenot, his parents, Clyde Fontenot and Melba Viator Fontenot; and 3 sisters, Mary F. Harrington, Judy F. Bufford and Cheryl Lynn Fontenot. Pallbearers will be Farrell, Carroll, Gene Jr., Roger, Leo Charles and Jacob Fontenot. Honorary pallbearers will be Rachel, Lacey, Madisen Fontenot, Lauren Dupuis, Derek Dupuis, Andrew Trahan Jr., Damian Trahan and Dawn Hebert. Readers for the service will be Rachel and Lacey Fontenot. Gift bearers will be Madisen, Lauren and Derek. The family would like to thank everyone at Abbeville General who took care of Gene and made him comfortable. They would also like to thank Acadian Ambulance for their kind and caring service. A special thanks also to Dr. Miller, Dr. Schexnaider and their staff, Dr. Prellop and staff at Oncologies, Inc and all of his family and friends for their thoughts and prayers. The Family request that visiting hours be observed Sunday, April 20th, at Vincent Funeral Home 209 South Saint Charles St., Abbeville from 9:30 a.m. until time of services on Monday.
