Gerald Cecil (Coach) Harrington

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, July 18, 2008 at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church for Gerald Cecil (Coach) Harrington, 74, who died on Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at his longtime residence in Abbeville. Rev. Jim Brady will be the celebrant of the funeral Mass, along with concelebrant Rev. Donald Theriot.
Coach Harrington, as he was affectionately known, was born in Abbeville on November 24, 1933. A 1951 graduate of Abbeville High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served with honor in the Korean War as a Navy Hospital Corpsman with the 151 Marine Division. After completion of his military service, he attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now ULL) and received a B.S. in Physical Education and Social Studies. He later attended McNeese State University, where he earned a M.Ed. in Supervision and Administration.
A thoughtful, generous, dedicated husband, father, and grandfather, he devoted much of his professional life to working with area youth. In 1982, he retired as head football and track coach at Abbeville High School after having taught and coached at several public and private schools in Louisiana, including St. Joseph High School (Rayne), De La Salle High School (New Orleans), Central Catholic High School (Morgan City), and St. Martinville High School. Most recently, he was a social worker with the LA Department of Social Services and the LA Department of Courts (T ASC).
His survivors include his wife, Joyclyn (Joy) Concienne Harrington; his children, Suzanna H. Piazza and her husband, Mark, and their sons, Charles Francis and Christopher Cecil Piazza, Robert John (Jack) Harrington and his wife, Casie, Jeri H. Sonnier and her husband, Tracy, and her daughter, Jacquelyn Elizabeth Bienvenu; his stepchildren, Monte Moss Brown and her husband, David, and their children, Rylie Caroline and Hudson Harrington Brown, and Jackson Hartley Moss and his wife, Anne Katherine; and his nephew, Patrick Harrington.
His parents, John Lloyd and Ozite Landry Harrington, and his brother, Lloyd James Harrington, preceded him in death.
His pallbearers will be Jack Harrington, Mark Piazza, Chuck Piazza, Chris Piazza, Tracy Sonnier, Jack Moss, David Brown, and Patrick Harrington.
Visitation will be at Vincent's Funeral Home on Thursday, July 17th from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. and on Friday, July 18th from 8 a.m. until time of the service. Interment will be at St. Paul Cemetery.
His family thanks Hospice of Acadiana, as well as his friends, relatives, and former colleagues, students, and players, for their care and support.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Hospice of Acadiana, Mount Carmel Elementary, or Vermilion Catholic High School.
