Abbeville—Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 26, 2014 at Vincent Funeral Home - Abbeville honoring the life of Joseph Alton Schexnayder, 80, who died Thursday, April 24, 2014 at Vermilion Health Care Center.
He will be laid to rest at St. Mary Magdalen Cemetery with Deacon Joe Hebert officiating the services. Pallbearers will be Larry Trahan, Danny Arabie, Clayton Dore, Allen Ray Stoute, Jr., Roger Fontenot and Marcus Duplechin. Honorary pallbearers will be Maurice Schexnayder and Jules Dore.
"Joe" was a huge fan of Elvis Presley. He was known to many as the "Elvis of Abbeville". He was a great baker having owned is own bakery shop in Delcambre - Joe's Bakery. He also worked in other bakeries in town, LeBlanc's Bakery and Jay's Bakery. He was retired with the City of Abbeville after working 23 1/2 years of service.
He is survived by his brother, Maurice Schexnayder of Lafayette; two sisters, Elrina Barras of Abbeville and Mrs. Jules (Anna Mae) Dore of St. Martinville; five half sisters; three half brothers; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Odence Schexnayder and Fedora Menard Doucet; sister, Theresa S. Trahan; two half brothers; and two half sisters.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Abbeville, 209 S. St. Charles Street, on Friday, April 25, 2014 from 3:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m.; Saturday, April 26, 2014 from 8:00 a.m. until time of services.
The family would like to thank the staff at Vermilion Health Care, 3rd floor staff at Abbeville General Hospital, Hospice of Acadiana, Dr, David Silar and Dr. Lan Minh Pham for the care and compassion shown to Joe and his family at their time of need.
