Dennis J. Broussard

Dennis Joseph Broussard was called home to his heavenly father on June 25, 2014. Dennis was the youngest child born to Ellis and Olivia LaBry Broussard on May 2, 1924. Dennis proudly served his country in World War II from 1943-1946. He told the story that his very rich “uncle” (Uncle Sam) paid for him to go on a couple of “cruises”. The first cruise was to Hawaii, and the second cruise was to the island of Iwo Jima on February 19, 1945. On February 23, 1945, Dennis witnessed the flag-raising on Iwo Jima’s Mt. Suribachi. After his honorable discharge from the US Army, he returned to Southwest Louisiana Institute (currently ULL) to complete his undergraduate coursework. He met Helen LeBouef in early 1946. It did not take long before he fell in love with her and proposed marriage to her. On April 5, 1947, Dennis made the best decision of his life by marrying Helen. A year later he received his B.A. in Social Studies Education with a minor in French Education. Dennis and Helen moved to Sulphur, LA in 1948. He began his professional career in education as a Social Studies teacher for grades 6th, 7th, and 8th. The GI Bill helped to pay for his Masters in Administration and Supervision at Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee which he received in 1951. In 1954, Dennis became the first principal at E. K. Key Elementary. While principal of W.T. Henning Elementary, Dennis was instrumental in getting the I-10 crosswalk built which allowed many children to safely cross the interstate to attend school at Henning Elementary School. Also, while at Henning, he led the way in getting the street name changed from Cemetery Road to Henning Drive. Dennis was the first principal in Calcasieu Parish to obtain Southern Association Accreditation for Elementary Schools. He completed his tenure as a principal and educator at Frasch Elementary in 1975. Dennis’ service to others could have been seen as a teacher for 20 years in Adult Education. Through Adult Education, he could help individuals achieve their career goals.After retiring from education, Dennis and Helen moved back to his home town of Kaplan. He served as an usher at Holy Rosary Catholic Church for approximately 30 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Woodmen of the World and VFW. Dennis was most proud of his 29 years of service on the SLEMCO Board of Directors representing Vermilion Parish. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Economic Center of Louisiana (ECOL). Dennis enjoyed playing golf and taking care of the farm.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, the former Helen LeBouef; three adoring daughters, Beverly and her husband, Ray Conner of Welsh, Diane and her husband, Ricky Venable of Church Point, Annette and her husband, Timothy Savoy of Moss Bluff; one loving son, James Broussard of Davenport, FL; eight precious grandchildren, Rhonda Conner Guidry, Leanna Conner Penn, Bradley Conner and his wife, Maghon, Eric Conner, Anna-Lee Conner, Katie Venable and her husband, Jamie Angelle, Michael Venable and his wife, Crystal, and Jaala Savoy; 7 wonderful great grandchildren; Leanna’s children, Taylor, Torrie, Tessa, and Gabriel; Katie’s daughters, Reese and Jules; and Anna-Lee’s daughter, Kaydence. He is also survived by his sister, Namaze Richard of Sulphur.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Kaplan, 300 N. Eleazar Avenue, on Friday, June 27, 2014 from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. with a rosary being prayed at 6 p.m.; Saturday, June 28, 2014 from 8 a.m. until services.
