Kaplan—Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 18, 2008 at an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church honoring the life of Lou Ella Trahan, 75, who died Friday, September 12, 2008 at Tillamook County General Hospital in Oregon.

She will be laid to rest at the Kaplan Cemetery with Reverend Mitchell Guidry officiating the services. Serving as pallbearers will be Michael Herpin, Sam Herpin, Stephen Bourque, Caleb Landry, Jared Trahan and Dr. Jayme Trahan.

She is survived by her six children, Catherine and her husband Michael Herpin of Abbeville, Gregory Trahan and his wife Pam of New Iberia, Angela and her husband Sam Herpin of Baton Rouge, Jules Trahan and his wife Yvonne of La Mesa, CA, Shawn Trahan of San Diego, CA, and Alyson and her husband Stephen Bourque of Kaplan; ten grandchildren, Caleb Landry, Jared Trahan and his wife Denise, Dr. Jayme Trahan, Lauren Trahan, Alexandra Herpin, Katherine Bowler, Rex Herpin, Abbey Bourque, Eliot Bourque, and Guy Bourque; three great grandchildren, Kennedy, Noah, and Reese Trahan; and a brother, Floyd Weber and his wife Beatrice.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Julius Trahan; her parents, Oklan Weber and the former Marie Landry; and a brother, Paul Melvin Weber.

Mrs. Trahan was born on July 3, 1933 in Kaplan, LA. She was a 1951 graduate of Kaplan High School and a 1954 graduate of Charity School of Nursing in New Orleans. She worked as a registered nurse for 34 years. While working for Louisiana Public Health in the 1950's she saw the need for educational services for handicapped children in Vermilion Parish. With urging by the superintendent of schools, she coordinated a meeting between state department of education officials and parents of handicapped children. The result was the birth of the Vermilion Parish School for the Handicapped. She always considered this her greatest accomplishment in nursing. She also administered the first polio vaccine in Vermilion Parish. In 2001, she was named as one of the Outstanding Nurses of Acadiana. She loved traveling, quilting, reading, and above all, spending time with her family.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Kaplan, 300 N. Eleazar Avenue, on Wednesday, September 17, 2008 from 12 p.m. until 8 p.m. with a rosary being prayed by Deacon Paul Roy Eleazar at 6 p.m. and Thursday from 8 a.m. until the procession departs for the church.
