Emery Joseph Bernard

July 26, 1929 — October 5, 2014

Abbeville—Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church honoring the life of Emery J. Bernard, 85 who died Sunday October 5, 2014 peacefully at home with family.

He will be laid to rest at St. Paul Cemetery with Father Manny Fernandez officiating services. Pallbearers will be Keith Bernard, Caden Bernard, Cristian Mandella, Clifford Bernard, Jr., Blaise Bernard, and Paul LeBlanc. Honorary pallbearers will be Dylan and Jude Bernard.

Emery was born in Delcambre, LA and was a lifetime resident of Abbeville, LA. He graduated from Delcambre High School and attended University of Louisiana at Lafayette (formerly SLI) and served in United States Army and was a Korean War Veteran. Emery worked for Piazza Office Supply, Stationer's Office Sales and retired from Gulf Coast Bank. He was a member of Grand Knights of the Abbeville Knights of Columbus #2281 and American Legion, served as a Boy Scout Leader, Civil Defense, Voter Poll, PTA member, and St Mary Magdalen Catholic Church Lector. His hobbies and interest were RV camping, traveling with friends and family, gardening, enjoyed
the company of his family, grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as their many friends. Also, he embraced the love of Cajun culture and its cuisine.

He is survived by his wife, Venola Thomas Bernard of 64 years, his son, Keith and wife, Joan of Abbeville; daughter, Serena and husband, Gerald Mandella of Lafayette; grandchildren, Ryan and Jade Bernard of Abbeville and Cristian and wife, Stormy Mandella of Houston, TX; great grandchildren, Caden, Dylan, and Kennedi Bernard of Abbeville and Braxton and Sloane Mandella of Houston, TX; sister, Judy and husband, Paul LeBlanc; and brother-in-law, Huey and wife, Myrtis Thomas of Erath; sister-in-law, Lena Bernard of Delcambre; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur and mother Lorena LeBlanc Bernard from Delcambre, LA; sister, Earline; and brother, Clifford.

The family would like to extend their appreciation and gratitude for the following professionals for their expert care during the last few years; Dr. John Mickey, PA Lisa and staff; Dr. Kenneth McCarron, Donna and staff; Dr. Scott Yerger; Dr Ed Breaux and staff; Concepts of Care of Erath; St. Joseph's Hospice of Lafayette - Carla Dutile, Chris, Daphney Fontenot, Esheika Fontenette, as well as Lafayette General Hospital and staff; and finally the many loving and compassionate caregivers over the last few years who cared for our father.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Abbeville, 209 S. St. Charles Street, on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 from 11:30 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m.; Wednesday, October 8, 2014 from 8:00 a.m. until time of service.
