Elizabeth Decker "Betty" Blanchard

Abbeville—Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at Vincent Funeral Home - Abbeville honoring the life of Elizabeth Decker Blanchard, 96, who died Friday, October 17, 2014 at her residence.

She will be laid to rest at Lake Lawn Cemetery in Metairie, LA. Elizabeth Jane “Betty” Decker Blanchard, wife of departed lifelong resident of Abbeville, Claude “Sonny” Blanchard, Jr., passed away peacefully at age 96 with her children at her side. Betty and Claude were married in 1942. Betty was born in Great Falls Montana in 1918 to Walton and Elizabeth Decker. They moved back to New Orleans in 1922 where Betty grew up and graduated from LSU, where she met Claude. When he returned from WW-II in 1945 they lived at LSU while Claude finished his degree, and a year later settled in Abbeville.

Betty was a long time active member of the Abbeville Women?s Club. Until a couple weeks ago she enjoyed playing Bridge with her close friends. Her devotion to her children saw her active in the Abbeville Elementary PTA, and she served as a Cub Scout Den Mother and a Girl Scout Leader.

She was devoted to her family and friends and always actively ready to vist, shop, or help with any creative endeavor.
She will be long remembered by her family and friends as a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother.


She is survived by her son, Claude Lloyd Blanchard, III and his wife Diane Tooke Blanchard; daughter, Diane Blanchard Collins and her husband Walter Collins; grandchildren, Christopher Blanchard and his wife Melanie Lynch Blanchard, Keith Blanchard and his wife Shannon Baldwin Blanchard, Lauren Srigley and her husband Larry, Courtney Lee and her husband Shawn, and Sherwood Collins and his wife Amy Boyle Collins; and great grandchildren, Bridget Blanchard, Esther Blanchard, Caden Blanchard, Kailee Blanchard, Keaton Srigley, Julia Lee, Collins Lee, Liam Collins, and Wesley Collins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Lloyd Blanchard, Jr; and parents, Walton Decker and the former Elizabeth Myers; brothers, Walton Decker, Robert Decker; a sister, Marjorie Decker Basham.

The family is grateful to Mallory Lege caregiver who helped her maintain her independence.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice of Acadiana or the Woman’s Club of Abbeville Scholarship Fund.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Abbeville, 209 S. St. Charles Street, on Monday, October 20, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.; Tuesday, October 21, 2014 from 8:00 a.m. until time of service.
