Abbeville Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 22, 2008 at a 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church honoring the life of Felix Frederick, Jr. , 80 , who died Sunday , October 19, 2008 at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital .


He will be laid to rest at St. Mary Magdalen Cemetery with Reverend William C. Blanda officiating the services. Pallbearers will be Cade Baudoin, Chris Broussard, Floyd Miller, Jr., Collins Frederick, Keith Sellers, Douglas Frederick, Sidney Frederick, Jr. and Dr. David Trahan. Honorary pallbearers will be Raymond Frederick, Larry Broussard, Jr., Adam Conner, Leonard Frederick, and Donald Ray Frederick.


After graduating from Mt. Carmel High in 1949, he finished one semester in the Seminary before graduating from SLI in 1952 and LSU in 1953. He enlisted in the army in 1953 and was honorably discharged in 1955. He was decorated with the National Defense Service Medal. Also while stationed in California, Prof spent his weekends on movie sets as an extra. He came home to Abbeville to devote his life to his mother and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. He has been a charter member of the third order Lay Carmelites since 1949. Prof started the Speech and Debate teams at Mt. Carmel in the 1950’s. When the doors opened at Vermilion Catholic in 1967, he started the Speech and Debate there. Throughout the 1950’s, 60’s, & 70’s his speech and debate squads qualified for national tournaments which were held from Washington DC to Miami Florida. He has been a constant at Vermilion Catholic over the last 41 years. In a recent article in the Bonnes Nouvelles newspaper Prof stated “In the next forty years, I see VC remaining a vital force in the community. It will always be here. It’s doing God’s Work. I am thankful for the little good I have done here. I am a great believer in Catholic Education. I could not have given my talent to any other cause.” Prof has been a mentor to the teachers, a father figure to the students, and a role model to anyone in their Catholic journey.



He
is survived by one sister, Dorothy Broussard; twenty-eight nieces and nephews; eighty-seven great nieces and nephews; one hundred forty-six great-great nieces and nephews; and fifteen great-great-great nieces and nephews.


He was preceded in death by his father, Felix Frederick Sr.; mother, Olita Hebert Frederick; three brothers, Sidney Frederick, Sr., Edwin Frederick, Sr. and Harris Frederick, Sr. ; one sister, Rena Theriot; three nieces and nephews; four great nieces and nephews; and two great-great nieces.



The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Abbeville , 209 S. St. Charles Street , on Monday, October 20, 2008 from 9:30 a.m. until 10:00 p.m.; Tuesday, October 21, 2008 from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m. both nights; and Wednesday, October 22, 2008 from 8:00 a.m. until time of service.



In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Felix "Prof" Frederick, Jr.’s name to Mount Carmel Elementary School, 405 Park Avenue, Abbeville, LA 70510, Vermilion Catholic High School to support the Speech/Drama Department or to the Prof Felix Frederick Library and Media Center.
