James Kerney Bourque

August 31, 1946 — February 13, 2009

Kaplan--Funeral services will be held Monday, February 16, 2009 at a 2 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church honoring the life of James Kerney Bourque, 62, who passed away peacefully with his family by his side at Tulane Medical Center in New Orleans on February 13, 2009. He will be laid to rest at St. Basil Catholic Cemetery with  Reverend David Broussard officiating the services. Honored to serve as pallbearers will be Brent Bourque, Daniel Broussard, Brady Gaspard, Kent Gaspard, Mike Landry, and Dennis Leger. Honorary pallbearers will be Kerry Bourque, Leighton Mire and Nicholas Mire.

Kerney was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather who touched the lives of many.  He was a mentor to others and was involved in the community serving on the Holy Rosary Parish Council, a member of the Knights of Columbus, and past Vice President of the Jaycees.  He also served his country in the United States Army as a pharmacist during the Vietnam Conflict. He was the previous owner of Thrifty Way Pharmacy in Kaplan for 28 years.  He served as a past member of the Business Advisory Committee for the City Council, Thrifty Way Pharmacies of Louisiana, Louisiana Wholesale and Drug Co., and Maxad Inc.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Gayle Hollier Bourque of Kaplan; son, Kerry Bourque and his wife Ann, of Houston, Texas; daughter, Holly Mire, and her husband Leighton of Lafayette; grandson, Nicholas Mire of Lafayette; mother, Elrita Bourque of Judice; brother, Irby Bourque of Kenner; and sister, Nell Bernard of Lafayette.

He was preceded in death by by his father, Wilson Bourque.

Kerney had a love and dedication for those following their vocation to the priesthood. His family requests, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the Office of Seminarians at the Diocese of Lafayette, 1408 Carmel Avenue, Lafayette, LA  70501 (337) 261-5652.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Kaplan, 300 N. Eleazar Avenue, on Sunday, February 15, 2009 from 1 p.m. until 10 p.m. with a recitation of the rosary at 7 p.m. Visitation will resume on Monday, February 16, from 9 a.m. until the procession departs for the church.
