Harry James Trantor

January 6, 1925 — January 19, 2016

Abbeville — A private graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 23, 2016 at Campti Cemetery in Center, Texas honoring the life of Harry James Trantor, 91, who died Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at Abbeville General Hospital.

Mr. Trantor was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, although strong willed he was often very softhearted. He devoted his life to caring for his large family, a wife and six children. In his later years, he took great joy in watching numerous British Broadcasting Corporation shows with his grandson, James. On Saturday, he would not miss his "Classic Saturday Night" on 97.3 the "Dawg".

Mr. Trantor was especially proud of his military service during World War II. He served as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army/Air Force from 1943-1945. He received numerous medals for his performance as a tail gunner in Martin B-26 Marauder aircrafts. His crew and Mr. Trantor were a close group and those that are left still communicate regularly.

Mr. Trantor became a transplanted "Cajun" when he left Oklahoma and moved to Louisiana for work in the oilfield. Times were very hard, so he sent his family to Louisiana by train and he had to hitchhike. He would spend the night along the way in cemeteries, saying it was the safest place on earth. Anyway that is the story he would tell. A man that put his family first before himself.

He worked in the oilfield as a rigger roughneck until he retired in 1984 due to medical problems.

Mr. Trantor is survived by two sons, Roy E. Trantor and his wife Debbie of Erath, and Joseph Trantor and his girlfriend Susan of Abbeville; three daughters, Donna Trantor of Abbeville, Kandice Duhon and her husband Jerry of Lafayette, Cynthia Landry and her husband Kelly of Kaplan; ten grandchildren, Patrick Landry, Chad "Bubba" Landry, Roy Landry, Summer Dronet, James C. Trantor, Keisha N. Trantor, Lainey Robinson, Michelle Duhon, Johnny Primeaux, and Tiffany Aucoin; nineteen great grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; one brother, Merritt Lee Trantor and his wife Frances Ann of Quincy, Illinois; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, M. Gean Trantor; father, Roy V. Trantor; mother, Irene Trantor; son, Harry J. Trantor, Jr.; sister, Bernice Maupin; brother-in-law, Bill Maupin; and grandson-in-law, Lt. Brandon Dronet of the U.S.M.C.

Mr. Trantor's family would like to extend great appreciation to Dr. Pham, Dr. M. Harrington, Dr. Weston Miller, Dr. Thibodeaux, and surgery nurse, Julie Bradley. Also a heartfelt thanks to "all" of the nurses on the I.C.U. Unit at Abbeville General Hospital for the respect and compassion showed to him and his family during this difficult time.
