Gueydan—Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 20, 2016 at First Baptist Church of Gueydan honoring the life of Evelyn Reese Hartwell, 96, who went to be with her heavenly father on Saturday, February 13, 2016 after being a good and faithful servant here on earth. She will be laid to rest at Gueydan Cemetery with Reverend Joel Hilbun officiating the services. Serving as pallbearers will be Blake Prejean, Bryan Touchet, Cannon Touchet, Christian Orgeron, Clyde Reese, Jr., and Ed Saal, Jr. Vocalist will be Luther Burney and pianist will be Joe Garbarino.
Evelyn resided at Rosewood Retirement and Assisted Living Community in Lafayette, which became her home in 2007. Born Evelyn Marie Reese on August 15, 1919 in Gueydan, LA. Evelyn lived her life in Gueydan until moving to Lafayette in 2007. She at one time owned a dress shop in Gueydan and later she and her husband, owned and operated Hartwell Motor Parts. Mrs. Hartwell was very active in her church and community. She started an Ecumenical group that hosted birthday parties for residents of the nursing home in Kaplan until the Gueydan nursing home opened in 1991 at which time they hosted parties there. She was a long time member of First Baptist Church of Gueydan. After moving to Lafayette and Rosewood, she joined First Baptist Church of Lafayette and was very happy there. She had many friends at First Baptist and loved attending Sunday school, Joy Club, and church services. Her hobbies included sewing, reading, and traveling in the U.S., Europe, Canada, and the Cayman Islands.
She is survived by her son, Lee Earl Hartwell and his wife, Sharon of San Salvador, El Salvador; two daughters, Marian Hartwell Cannon and her husband, Thomas D. Cannon of Lafayette and Lynn Hartwell Medley Brown and her husband, Dr. Randy Brown of Scottsdale, AZ; five grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren.
Her family would like to thank the staff of Rosewood for their enduring generosity and exceptional tender loving care.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marion Raymond Hartwell; her parents, Henry Reese and the former Lillian Moore; three brothers, Roy Reese, Clyde Reese, and Milton Reese; and one son-in-law, Dr. Benjamin Medley.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at First Baptist Church of Gueydan, 514 Main Street, on Saturday, February 20, 2016 from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m.
