Marie Mazil Trahan Couvillon

July 23, 1924 — April 11, 2016

Kaplan— Marie Mazil Trahan Couvillon passed away at 3:30 p.m., during the Hour of Great Mercy, on April 11, 2016. She was 91 years old.
The daughter of Leonce and Evie Trahan of Cow Island, La., Mazil graduated from E. Broussard High School, where she received the American Legion Award, she was the devoted wife of Roy Couvillon for sixty-five years and they made their home in Kaplan, La. She lovingly raised seven children with Roy.

Mazil had the strength of a rancher’s wife and the heart and love of an artist. Besides being a wife, mother, and accomplished homemaker, Mazil invested her many talents into her community. She was a 4-H club leader, a member of a homemakers' group, as well as a lector, choir member, and Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion at her home parish, Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Kaplan.
Mazil’s many hobbies included refinishing furniture and painting—particularly capturing the beauty of south Louisiana on canvas. She deeply cherished her French heritage and ceaselessly endeavored to instill the same passion for the culture and language in the next generation.

A faithful Catholic and patriotic American, Mazil ensured every family meal began with a prayer of thanksgiving and the Pledge of Allegiance—always in English and then again in French. She has now joined the choir of Angels and Saints, praising God in Heaven with her favorite hymn—"Amazing Grace"—as her family strives to continue her beautiful song and legacy here on Earth.

Mazil was preceded in death by her husband Roy, her parents, Leonce Trahan and the former Evie Landry, her sister Joyce Trahan Noel, and her brother Aubre Trahan. She is survived by her seven children—Vivian Andrepont (husband Keith), Wayne Couvillon (wife Brenda), Deborah Blancher (husband John), Rachael Donovan (husband Brian), Suzette Trahan (husband David), Joan Maggio (husband David), and Paula Cherise Richard (husband Horace "Butch"); her sixteen grandchildren—Lorraine Yates, Monica Yates Elliot, Laura Couvillon, Ava Couvillon, Matthew Boucher, John Blancher (wife Christine), Eve Blancher Hankins (husband Jimmy), Michael Donovan, Meaghan Donovan, Sarah Trahan, Emma Trahan, Christian Trahan, Michael Maggio (wife Mallory), Matthew Maggio (wife Elizabeth), Catherine Maggio Schmucker (husband Kyle), and Phillip Richard; and nine great-grandchildren—Scott Elliot, Elise Elliot, Piper Blancher, Blaise Blancher, Lola Blancher, Tatum Hankins, Hale Hankins, Luca Hankins, and Hannah Maggio.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, in Lafayette and St. Joseph’s Hospice - The Carpenter House, in Lafayette for the attention and loving care they provided to Miss Mazil in her final hours. The family would also like to extend its heartfelt thanks to the many sitters who cared for Miss Mazil over the last eighteen months in such loving and supportive ways, making the final months of her life comfortable and full of joy.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Kaplan, 300 N. Eleazar Avenue, on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. with a rosary being prayed at 7 p.m.; Wednesday, April 13, 2016 from 10 a.m. until services.

The Roman Catholic Funeral Liturgy Mass will be at Holy Rosary Catholic Church (602 Church Ave, Kaplan, LA 70548) on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at 3:00 pm with the Rite of Committal and burial to be followed immediately at Saint Mary Magdalen Cemetery and Mausoleum (also known as New Catholic Cemetery) in Abbeville, La.
