Bennet Louis "Ben" Broussard

June 27, 1931 — May 12, 2009

Kaplan—Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 14, 2009 at Vincent Funeral Home - Kaplan honoring the life of Bennet Louis Broussard, 77, who peacefully passed away Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at his residence.

He will be laid to rest at Kaplan Cemetery with Deacon Paul Roy Eleazar officiating the services. Serving as pallbearers will be Harlan Rost, Kit Trahan, Caleb Blansett, Beau Harrington, Mitchell Broussard, and Chip Blansett. Honorary pallbearer will be Cody Broussard.

Bennet graduated high school in 1948, at the age of 17, and with the signature of his parents, joined the military. This was the beginning of a long career serving his country and his community. He joined the Air Force and spent ten years as an airplane mechanic and achieved the rank of Tech Seargent. Serving in places like Goose Bay Labrador, England and several bases in the states, he serviced tankers that refueled jets in flight. He was active in the Korean War and served ten more years in the Air Force Reserve before retiring with the rank of Master Seargent. While he was in the Reserves, he owned and operated his own bulk oil and tire business in Kaplan serving the farmers and the general public. This presented an oppurtunity to get to know the people in the area on a personal basis and was consequently appointed and then elected to the position of police juror. His business prospered and also his political career. In 1970 he was elected mayor of the city of Kaplan, served three terms, retired, then later served as city clerk, ran for mayor again, served two more terms, making a total of 20 years as mayor, which is a record as of today.

Retiring as mayor at the age of 65 ended a span of forty-nine years serving his country and community. He also retired from his business, Ben's Oil and Tire Co. at the same time.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Genelle S. Broussard; six children, Debbie Fedeli and her companion Pat Hair, Julianna Broussard, Bennie Claire Robinson and her husband Roger, Jinx Blansett, Stephanie Harrington and her husband Randy, and Benjie Broussard and his wife Donna; fourteen grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Raoul Broussard and one sister, Joyce Duhon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Obrey Broussard and Rosa Vincent; and one sister, Yvette Breaux.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Kaplan, 300 N. Eleazar Avenue, on Wednesday, May 13, 2009 from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m.; Thursday, May 14, from 8 a.m. until services.
