Larry Gene Dickson

Abbeville—A private family memorial will be held at a later date honoring the life of Larry Gene Dickson, 79, who died Friday, June 3, 2016 at Lafayette General Medical Center surrounded by family.
Larry was born on August 5, 1936 in Mansfield, OH to Howard and Alice Dickson. In his younger years he served in the United States Army. He graduated from the University of Southwestern Louisiana with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Applied Music. Larry was best known in the early 70’s as a member of the radio personality group on 98.1 WAFB Baton Rouge. He then transitioned to chief meteorologist on Channel 9 WAFB Baton Rouge until 1979 when he and his family moved to Abbeville, LA. Larry began working for the First National Bank of Abbeville. He retired in 1988 as a Vice President of First Commercial Bank of Abbeville.
Larry’s love of music led him to becoming the church pianist at the Abbeville United Methodist Church from 1980 until his untimely demise, where he also led a very active weekly bible study group. He was a member of Chorale Acadienne, where he had the honor of singing at Carnegie Hall on three separate occasions. Larry enjoyed performing with the Abbey Players in many of their theater productions. In addition to having an amateur radio license, he enjoyed ballroom and square dancing, bowling, and golf. He was a very loving and inspirational husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He will be remembered fondly by those who knew him and loved him, as being a “larger than life” man who will be greatly missed for many years.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Frances McPherson Dickson; his two daughters, Elizabeth D. Bodin of Abbeville, and Erin D. Landry (Randy Landry) of Lafayette; brother Rev. G. James Dickson of Oxnard, CA; and four grandchildren, Hattie A. Bodin (R.J. Toal), Amelia B. Adams (Taylor Adams), Abby E. Landry, and Anna C. Landry; as well as other extended family..
He was preceded in death by by his parents, Howard and Alice Dickson of Mansfield, OH.
