She will be laid to rest at St. David Chapel Cemetery with Reverend Jason Vidrine officiating the services.
Born in Leroy in 1920, Velma Bonin Trahan moved to Kaplan in 1934 and graduated from Kaplan High in 1937. She married Robert D. Trahan Jr. in 1938 and settled in Mulvey, where she lived for the rest of her long and full life.
She was known for her generous spirit, her strength, and her work ethic. She was devoted to St. David Chapel, where she served as a sacristan for more than forty years. She was the treasurer of the St. David Ladies’ Altar Society. She was also a longtime Eucharistic minister at the Kaplan Nursing Home.
She was a Girl Scout leader for more than twenty years. She was active in Home Demonstration for many years and renowned for her needlework and craft projects. She was an expert seamstress, creating many outfits for her daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
She made hundreds of girls' dresses and dozens of porcelain dolls, which she only made for family and charity, especially the bazaars for St. Peter School in Gueydan and Maltrait Memorial School in Kaplan. She was a member of the Cajun Quilters in Kaplan for more than a decade.
Her family and friends will never forget her delicious cooking, especially her crawfish dressing, crawfish étouffeé, gumbo, pork roast, and pralines that she cooked until the end. She was definitely a woman of many talents and there wasn't anything she couldn't do.
She will be truly missed by her family. She is survived by her two daughters, Loretta and her husband, Jeffrey Trahan, Sr. and Peggy and her husband, Bradley Schexnider, both of Mulvey.
