Abbeville-Doris Jean Spates Huntsberry, 76, was welcomed into heaven by our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Thursday, July 21, 2016. Her final days were spent surrounded by her family.
Doris was born in Abbeville, LA on December 18, 1939. She was brought up in the Baptist Church and converted to Catholicism before her marriage to her loving husband, Joseph “Bobby” Huntsberry. Doris graduated from James A. Herod High School in 1957; and furthered her education at Grambling State University by obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education, with an interest in Library Science. She was a dedicated educator and retired from the Vermilion Parish School Board after thirty years of service.
Doris was a devoted Christian who lived life according to her faith. Doris was a faithful member of St. Theresa Catholic Church, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister and often volunteered to help organizations such as the Knights of Peter Claver Council #77 and the Christian Service Center.
Doris enjoyed reading, shopping, spending time with her family, going to the casino, and making jewelry. She was soft-spoken, always had a pleasant and calm demeanor and cherished her family and friends. She was a strong and courageous woman who never allowed her illnesses to interfere with her love for and commitment to her family.
Doris Jean will forever be remembered by her loving and devoted husband of 47 years, Joseph “Bobby” Huntsberry of Abbeville, LA; her three daughters, Carla Ruffins (Donovan), Charlotte Huntsberry, and Christina Huntsberry, all of Humble, TX; and her three grandchildren, Joshua Ruffins, Justin Ruffins, and Chloe Huntsberry. She also leaves to cherish her precious memories her sister, Diane Spates; her sisters in-law: Otherea Bernard, Doris D. Huntsberry, Annie Huntsberry, Joyce Turnley, Eva Louis, Theresa Baptiste and Rita Spates, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends, and her godson, Michael Shawn Huntsberry.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Matthew Spates, Sr. and Norella Davenport Spates and one brother, Matthew Spates, Jr.
Visitation will be held at Vincent Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 27, 2016 from 8:30AM-10:45AM with a rosary to be recited at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow at Huntsberry Memorial Gardens in Milton, LA.
