Abbeville-Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at St. James Chapel in Esther, LA honoring Brenda Ruth Lege, 70, a longtime resident of New Orleans who passed away on September 21, 2016 at her residence. Fr. Emanuel Fernandez will conduct the services with internment following at the Esther Mausoleum.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul Leon “Pierre” Lege, Emilie Veazey Lege and one sibling, Wilton Ray Lege.
She is survived by siblings, Paul Lonnie Lege and his wife Valla Broussard Lege, George Berton Lege and his wife Margaret Bernard (deceased), Robert Leland Lege and his wife Becky Rawlings Lege, Nettie Marie Lege Detraz and her husband Daniel Detraz, Cheryl Jane Lege Elbers and her husband Don Charles Elbers, Arnold James “Pete” Lege and his wife Peggy Broussard Lege, and John Barry “Chop” Lege, as well as numerous nieces & nephews.
Brenda was born in Abbeville, LA, where she also attended school at Mt. Carmel. Brenda lived in Intracoastal City, LA along with her parents and seven siblings.
Brenda was impressed by the life of the Sisters of Mt. Carmel who taught them in school. After graduation she joined the Order of Carmelites. She was first an elementary teacher but asked to become a nurse and studied at the University of Southwestern Louisiana earning a B.S. degree in nursing in 1972. She has served as a staff and charge nurse and supervisor at hospitals in New Orleans, Lake Charles, and Berkeley California. In 1975 she became the Director of Health Services for the Indochinese Refugees Program in New Orleans and was interested in the healing techniques of eastern holistic medicine. She studied at John Kennedy University in California to earn a M.A. degree in Clinical Holistic Health Education in 1983.
Brenda later returned to New Orleans and helped open the Center for Holistic Living to provide spiritual counseling, massage therapy, stress management, and other holistic therapies. She taught courses in Holistic Spirituality at Loyola University and was invited to conduct lectures, seminars, and workshops nationwide. She was hired by religious congregations to offer retreats to groups.
Brenda worked at East Jefferson General Hospital as a registered nurse in the Wellness Center and for many years in the Supportive Care Department, counseling people with end-of-life issues. When confronted with ovarian cancer, she shared her experiences and spirituality with her many friends, colleagues, former clients and loving family. By way of this announcement, all friends and family members are invited to attend her funeral.
