Myrtis G. Broussard

July 17, 1918 — February 8, 2010

Kaplan—Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at a 2 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church honoring the life of Myrtis G. Broussard, 91, who died Monday, February 8, 2010 at Kaplan Healthcare Center. She will be laid to rest at Cossinade Cemetery with Reverend Bill Ruskoski officiating the services.

Myrtis was raised in Cossinade, Louisiana as a young child and spent the rest of her life outside of Kaplan. She was a graduate of Kaplan High School and St. Mary's Dominican College in New Orleans where she received a degree in education. She taught elementary grades for twenty years and later became a reading lab teacher until her retirement. During this time she befriended the Canadian teachers who taught French at Kaplan Elementary. They spent many holidays with the Broussard family. Mr. and Mrs. Broussard visited these families in Quebec, Canada. As a member of TIRRA and CODOFIL she and her husband enjoyed making new friends and traveling to different countries to represent the association.

Myrtis was a charter member of Kaplan's Mardi Gras Krewe of Chic-A-La-Pie having served as Queen Jambalaya II. After the death of her husband, she replaced him on the Board of Directors at Kaplan State Bank. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters and the Ladies Altar Society, the Garden Club and Vermilion Parish Woman's Auxiliary to the Cattleman's Association. Myrtis was also an active worker in the October Fete booths for many years.

She is survived by three daughters, Ann and her husband, Michael Langlinais of Cow Island, Joan and her husband, Tommy Meagher of Lafayette and Ellen and her husband, Lonnie Vincent of Kaplan; one daughter-in-law, Karen Broussard of Kaplan; thirteen grandchildren, Chip, Shane, Cory and Leah Langlinais, Eddie and David Meagher, Lori Maraist, Spence, Chris, and Blake Vincent, and Julie Trahan, Gordy Broussard and Leslie Devall; and 25 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J.G. "Ken" Broussard; one son, Johnny Broussard; one brother, Rustum Girouard; one half brother, Whitney Girouard; and her parents, Ernest Girouard and the former Leah Breaux.

A special thank you goes out to all of her sitters who were so kind, considerate, gentle and loving to Myrtis for so many years - Ruby Touchet, Beverly Roche, Cheryl Marceaux, Louise Francis, Joyce Bourque, Delta Broussard and Mary Lou Marceaux.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Myrtis Broussard's name to Alzheimer's Association (Louisiana Chapter), 3717 Government Street, Ste. 7, Alexandria, LA 71302 or Vermilion 4-H Foundation, 1105 West Port Street, Abbeville, LA 70510.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Kaplan, 300 N. Eleazar Avenue, on Monday, February 8, 2010 from from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m.; Tuesday, from 9 a.m. until 1:45 p.m. when the procession will depart for the church.
