Kaplan—Funeral services will be held Monday, February 22, 2010 at a 2:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church honoring the life of Paul Floyd Meaux, 56, who died Saturday, February 20, 2010 at Lafayette General Medical Center following a thirteen-month battle with a rare form of Melanoma. He will be laid to rest at Kaplan Cemetery with Reverends William C. Blanda, Bill Ruskoski, David Broussard and Emmanuel Okwaraocha officiating the services. Pallbearers will be Brady J. Meaux, Brandon P. Meaux, Jimmy C. Meaux, Larry P. Primeaux, Donny Broussard and Ronald Menard. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Daniel Gaspard, Raywood Bertrand, Lance Primeaux, Todd Saltzman, fellow Kaplan State Bank board members and Advisory Board, O.H. Deshotels III, J. Vernon Johnson, Charles B. Trahan, Ivan J. Bourque Sr., James D. Girouard Sr. and Mahlen Meaux.

Mr. Meaux was a 1971 graduate of Kaplan High School and with the suggestion of Mr. Rene Simon began his career at Kaplan State Bank on November 12, 1971 as a bookkeeper. Throughout the years he has mastered many positions in the bank. In December 1976 Paul was promoted to Assistant Cashier along with his close colleague, Dora Broussard, and in 1977 he was promoted to the position of a Loan Officer in Consumer Lending.

His lending expertise gave him the opportunity for promotions to Senior Vice President, with many responsibilities such as Senior Lending Officer, Senior Operational Officer, Loan Review Officer, Compliance Officer, Asset and Liability Management Committee, Investment Committee, EDP Committee and Y2K Committee Chairman. In 1990, Mr. Meaux graduated from the acclaimed AIB Graduate School of Banking and also American School of Banking of LSU. He and Kaplan State Bank are accredited farm lending agents for agricultural loans throughout the State of Louisiana.

Mr. Meaux was elected Director of Kaplan State Bank on December 8, 1998, and was promoted to President effective January 1, 2006. His financial knowledge and his compassion for all customers has been instrumental in leading Kaplan State Bank to the rock solid bank it is today. Mr. Meaux has developed many financial programs that are helpful to our community like the development of the VISA check card program. Paul was very instrumental in implementing the first ATM, and also developed many home and farm loan programs.

For many years he has been a member of the Kaplan Zoning Commission and was currently serving as Chairman of the Kaplan Housing Authority. He was also a former member of the Kaplan Lions Club.

Paul and Gloria are members of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and have served as Eucharistic Members and Perpetual Adorers. In 1976, Paul and Gloria teamed together with the late Mr. Adam Leger and began working the bank booth for the Maltrait Memorial Catholic School Spring Bazaar. In addition Paul was Chairman of the October Fete and after his term ended there, both Paul and Gloria served as Bank Booth Chairpersons for the Holy Rosary –Cabrini October Fete through 2008. His love for his church community offered him the opportunity to become Holy Rosary – Cabrini Parish Council President, Finance Committee Chairman, became a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church Cemetery Board, as well as a Trustee for Holy Rosary – Cabrini Parish from May 1984 to May 1987 and was again asked to serve a second term from May 1992 to May 1997. Paul has served with several former Pastors of Holy Rosary – Cabrini beginning with the late Fr. Dan Schexnayder, and continued serving in his capacity with the following pastors - Fr. Donald Leger, Fr. Bill Ruskoski and Fr. William C. Blanda.

Mr. Meaux was never without a smile on his face. He was truly loved by all who met him and had an unselfish zeal for life. He inspired all who knew him to be a better person in life and not to be afraid to go the extra mile for family, friends, customers and peers.

Throughout his battle with this rare form of Melanoma he brought thousands of people to prayer, both for himself and others, within our community. His prayer blanket, given to him by a special friend, brought comfort to him throughout his battle with cancer and was never away from him as he went through his final days.

Paul is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Gloria Ann Trahan Meaux, his sons Brady James Meaux and his wife, Tara and Brandon Paul Meaux. He leaves to cherish his loving memory, granddaughters, Mallory Elizabeth Meaux and Morgan Claire Meaux and his step-granddaughter Hannah Eve Boudreaux, all of Kaplan. Paul is also survived by his stepfather, Newton Trahan and his mother, the former Mary Elise Bertrand of Kaplan. He also leaves behind, his two sisters Linda M. Marceaux and her husband, Marion and Laura M. Primeaux and her husband, Larry, all of Kaplan; his niece, the former Leslie Primeaux, and her husband, Todd Saltzman; his nephew and godchild, Lance J. Primeaux; and his brother, Jimmy C. Meaux and his wife, the former Vicki Shexnider of Rayne. Paul also leaves behind his godchild, Kelly Meaux Potier and her husband, Martin and Kelly’s son, Kade Stutes of Lafayette; his father-in-law, Paul Weston Trahan and his wife, the former Loraine Gaspard Breaux; godchild, Jamie Dartez Menard of Kaplan, along with numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Paul was preceded in death by his son Blake Royce Meaux, who twenty years ago, at the young age of 6, fought a long and brave battle with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia; his father, Royce J. Meaux; his paternal grandparents, Clomare Meaux and the former Leonie Abshire; his uncle, Paul Douglas Meaux; his maternal grandparents, Aubrey Bertrand and the former Edmay Roche; and his mother-in-law, the former Mary Catherine Faulk.

The Meaux family would like to thank everyone for their support and prayers throughout Paul’s entire journey, beginning with his doctors in Lafayette: Dr. Edward P. Lyons, who has been his Internist and long time friend for the past 30 years, and Dr. Joseph Brierre. They would also like to acknowledge his doctors in Houston, Dr. Sunil Patel and Dr. Agop Bedikian, who were his Melanoma Team specialists at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. Their devotion and unwavering presence with him throughout his illness will always be remembered with much love and gratitude.

The family would also like to thank Earl Seaux, Murphy Guilbeaux and Belinda Hargrave, who were instrumental in the coordination of the music for the wake service and funeral Mass. The family further acknowledges Roland, Barbara and David Simon, for their part in making Paul comfortable on his trips to Houston, Texas for his treatments and also walking the journey with Paul, Gloria and family, always offering their support in many of the most difficult times.

Also giving heartfelt thanks to Reverend Herb Benerfield of Delcambre for the beautiful vigil service and also to Paul's first cousin, Marlene Meaux Olson from Florida, his beloved godchildren, Kelly Meaux Potier and Lance Primeaux and his beloved niece, Leslie P. Saltzman, who will do the readings for his wake service.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Kaplan, 300 N. Eleazar Avenue, on Sunday, February 21, 2010 from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. with a rosary being prayed at 7 p.m.; Monday, February 22, from 8 a.m. until 2:15 p.m. when the procession will depart for the church.
