Louie Edwin Shirley was born in Meridian, Mississippi on November 21, 1919, to Walter Clifton Shirley and Margaret Cecilia Semmes Shirley. He passed away in Jennings, LA on March 25, 2010. Louie was a part of what some people refer to as “the greatest generation.” But to a lot of us he was the greatest Dad, uncle and friend. He served in the Merchant Marines during WWII on a ship delivering war supplies across both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. He settled in New Orleans and went to work for New Orleans Public Service (NOPSI). There he met Catherine “Cappie” Mc Duff. They had two kids, Kathleen and Mark. It was Louie who instilled the love of the outdoors in the kids beginning with tree frogs in the living room and minnows in the bath tub. Louie and Cappie were active parishioners at St. Matthias Catholic Church in New Orleans, serving on many committees over the years. Louie earned a Liberal Arts degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1979. After working for more than 40 years at NOPSI, he retired as Plant Manager from the same Market Street Power Plant where he had begun as a maintenance hand in 1945. He was brother to Walter Clifton Shirley, Sadie Brackman, and Mary Ulmer. He was attentive to his greater family throughout his life. Uncle Louie was always available at family gatherings to instigate fun for the kids and tell jokes with a completely straight face. It was all time well spent. He was much loved and will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. He is survived by his son Mark Shirley, with wife Rebecca Vanya Shirley and their two boys, Jonathan and wife Helen and Stephen; his daughter, Kathleen Shirley (Wiltenmuth) Haggar, with husband Kelly Haggar and their children, James Salas and wife Emilia, Lauren Wiltenmuth; great grandson, Jacob Gutierrez; and step grandchildren, Steven Haggar and John Haggar.
