Eutis "Chin" Mathiew

July 19, 1920 — March 28, 2010

Kaplan—Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at a 1 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church honoring the life of Eutis Mathiew, 89, who died Sunday, March 28, 2010 at Lafayette General Medical Center. He will be laid to rest at Kaplan Cemetery with Reverend David Broussard officiating the services. Serving as pallbearers will be Jason LeBlanc, Jacob Mathiew, Chris Breaux, Adam Schexnayder, Lane Lonion and Zachary Mathiew.

Mr. Mathiew was a World War II Army Veteran, serving in the European Theater. His war time travels took him to France, Germany, Belgium, and Luxembourg and he fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

For 31 years, Mr. Mathiew had a full service gas station in Kaplan, “Chins Full Service,” before retiring in 1991. Over the years “Mr. Chin” as he was affectionately called, made lots of good friends, many who are no longer with us. He spent his retirement fishing, gardening, and spending time with his family who he adored. He loved sports, particularly LSU baseball and football and was an avid Yankees fan. Mr. Mathiew was a member of the VFW, American Legion and the Knights of Columbus. He was a parishioner of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, having previously served as an usher. Mr. Mathiew will be truly missed by his family and friends. He was one of kind.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Joyce Guidry Mathiew of Kaplan; two sons, David Mathiew and his wife, Linda of Nunez and Gabe Mathiew and his wife, Francine of Maurice; two daughters, Sara and her husband, David LeBlanc of Nunez and Brenda and her husband, Jimmie Schexnayder of Kaplan; two sisters, Noamie Simon and Eliza Boulet, both of Kaplan; thirteen grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Tertule Mathiew and the former Euzide Abshire; and one sister, Eunice LeBlanc.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Kaplan, 300 N. Eleazar Avenue, on Monday, March 29, 2010 from 3:30 p.m. until 10 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 6:30 p.m.; Tuesday, March 30, from 8 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. when the procession will depart for the church.
