ABBEVILLE- Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 13, 2006 at an 11:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. James Church in Esther honoring the life of Joseph Maxie Pierce, 83, who died September 10, 2006 at Abbeville General Hospital. He will be laid to rest at Esther Community Cemetery with Reverend Mathew Mullamangalam officiating the services. Pallbearers will be Denis Boffy, Carrick Boffy, Barry Pierce, Josh Duhon, Ryan Pierce, William Appel, Brent Vaughan and Curtis Bufford. Maxie Pierce was born and raised in Theall, Louisiana. One of the many things be did during his life was, a school bus driver, a rice and cattle farmer, and a business owner. Maxie was mostly known for his restaurant and lounge he owned in Intracoastal City. This business eventually expanded to a grocery store, fuel dock, service station, and a gas and fuel distributor. One of the business achievements Maxie will be remembered for was his affiliation with the Kiwanis fishing rodeo every Labor Day weekend. Maxie Pierce was also a World War II veteran in the Coast Guard. He was honorably discharged in the fall of 1945. Today, people would call Maxie an entrepreneur. Because of his willing effort to try anything, Maxie was successful throughout his life. There were many accomplishments Maxie will be remembered for. The one that will be remember the most, was his willingness to help people during time of need. Slemco established an award to give to people who had helped Slemco workers during times of emergency. The first award was given to Maxie. For many years, Maxie was known by most of his close friends and business associates as "Poor Maxie". He is survived by his beloved and caring companion, Myrtis Foster of Cow Island; one son, Barry Pierce of Abbeville; three daughters, Rebecca P. Boffy and her husband Denis of Abbeville, Jessica P. Vaughan and her husband Brent of Abbeville, Juliette Pierce of Baton Rouge; his former wife and mother of his children, Estelle Prejean Pierce of Baton Rouge; friend of the family Karen McCalister of Baton Rouge; seven grandchildren, Carrick Boffy and his wife Holly of Milton, Nathalie Boffy of Abbeville, Amanda Boffy of Abbeville, Bridget Duhon and her husband Josh of Abbeville, Brett Emily Vaughan of Abbeville, Ryan Pierce of Lafayette, and Kimberly Pierce of Lafayette; and one great grandson, Tyler Patterson of Lafayette; and two sisters, Maudry Appel of Abbeville and Georgia Broussard of Erath. He was preceded in death by his father, Renee Pierce; mother, Rebecca Guidry Pierce; sister, Sadie Warszawski; and three brothers, Weston Theall, Casey Pierce and George Theall. The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home, 209 South St. Charles, Abbeville, Tuesday, September 12th from 1:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m.; Wednesday, September 13th from 8:00 a.m. until time of services.
