Abbeville—Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, May 13, 2010 at Abbeville United Methodist Church honoring the life of Roy Vernon Hoffpauir, 93, who died Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at Abbeville General Hospital.
He will be laid to rest at Graceland Cemetery with Reverend John Vining officiating the services.
He is survived by his nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great great nieces and nephews, and great great great nieces and nephews, and his very special and wonderful caregiver and friend, Sam.
He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph O'Neal Hoffpauir and Anna Lee H. Hoffpauir, and his six sisters Daisy H. Desormeaux, Mazie H. Pedigo, Wilma H. Luquette, Thelma H. Perry, Lucille H. Guidry, and Myrtie H. Duplantis.
A native and lifelong resident of Abbeville, Roy, better known as Vernon to his family, was a high school English teacher who retired with 39 ½ years in the classroom, most of those years were at Gueydan High School. He was a member of the Louisiana and Vermilion Parish Retired Teachers Associations.
Roy was a veteran of the military having served his country in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the American Legion.
He was a life time and very active member of the Abbeville United Methodist Church where he once served on many committees, served as church treasurer, secretary of the Administrative Board, Sunday School Superintendent, church lay leader, delegate to Annual Conference, Sunday school teacher, and sang for many years in the church choir. He also attended and shared his witness of God's love in his life with others at many Lay Witness Missions in various states and in Mexico.
Roy was known for his kind, generous, soft spoken personality. He always wore a smile and spoke kindly to others. He loved to sing, read, work crossword puzzles, and look at game shows. He was fascinated with learning other languages, including Spanish, German, and French.
A very special word of thanks to Rev. John Vining and the wonderful church family at the Abbeville United Methodist Church for their prayers, support, concern, compassion, and comfort, all of which have been blessings beyond measure. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude and appreciation to Sam, Gemma, Hashmeen, Lisa, Jeanette, Rose, and Tammy for their dedicated and loving care, to Dr. Ronald LaHasky, to Acadian Home Health of Abbeville, the third floor nurses at Abbeville General, the LTAC staff, and to Heart of Hospice.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Abbeville, 209 S. St. Charles Street, on Wednesday, May 12, 2010 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.; Thursday, May 13, 2010 from 8:00 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. when the procession will depart for the church.
