Kaplan—Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 19, 2010 at a 2 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church honoring the life of Otto Istre, 83, who died peacefully Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at Abrom Kaplan Memorial Hospital. He will be laid to rest at Kaplan Cemetery with Reverend David Broussard officiating the services.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He proudly served his country in the United States Army as a postal clerk from 1945-1947. He spent his career working on a rice and soybean farm and was proud of his contribution to the agriculture community. He enjoyed spending time with family and was known for hosting many family barbecues and gatherings. Mr. Istre loved playing games, especially solitaire and WaHoo.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joyce Fontenot Istre; daughter Peggy Suire and her husband, Lloyd of Gueydan; daughter, Brenda Fruge and her husband, Lawless of Kaplan; grandchildren: Shannan Z. Waits and her husband, Hilton of Maurice, Andrea S. Zaunbrecher and her husband, Ronny of Lake Arthur, Jason Suire and his wife, Darla of Gueydan, Heather F. Cormier of Crowley, Bonnie F. Monceaux and her husband, Casey of Kaplan; great grandchildren: Connor and Kinsey Waits, Daniel and Whitney Zaunbrecher, Katherine Cormier, Reagan and Sage Suire. He also has three surviving sisters: Gladys Hargrave of Kaplan, Annie Belle LeMaire of Kaplan and Evelyn Smith of Gueydan; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Eugenie Romero Istre and his father, Odel Istre; brother, Paul Istre; brother, Rene Istre and twin brother, Otis Istre.
The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Kaplan, 300 N. Eleazar Avenue, on Wednesday, August 18, 2010 from 2 p.m. until time of services on Thursday afternoon. A rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
