Dr. Perry George Sudduth

Abbeville—Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at an 11:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church honoring the life of Abbeville native Dr. Perry George Sudduth, 82, who died Saturday, August 28, 2010 at his residence.

He will be laid to rest at St. Paul Cemetery Mausoleum with Reverend Scott DesOrmeaux officiating the services. Pallbearers will be Lloyd W. Campisi, James H. Domengeaux, Carroll “Bud” Judice, Hunter Sudduth, James H. Domengeaux, Jr. and Robert D. Liebkemann. Honorary pallbearers will be Allen Bares, Jr., Dr. Sonny Young, Albert Steen, Marcus Broussard, Jr., Bernard Bohrer, Dr. Corbett LeBoeuf, and Dr. Howard Alleman.

Dr. Sudduth was born in Abbeville on December 11, 1927 to Jessie Bourque Sudduth and George W. Sudduth. He graduated as Valedictorian of Abbeville High School in 1945 and accepted an athletic scholarship to Southwestern Louisiana Institute (SLI), where he earned a varsity letter in football and was a member of the S Club and the fraternity Alpha Sigma Kappa.

His undergraduate career was interrupted by a two-year deployment to Tokyo, Japan, where he served in the army of occupation under General Douglas MacArthur. Following his discharge, he returned to Southwestern and graduated with honors in 1950, receiving a bachelor of science degree in physics and chemistry, with distinction.

Dr. Sudduth continued to Louisiana State University Medical School, where he was a dean’s list student and member of Phi Kappa Phi, National Honor Society, and Alpha Omega Alpha, the National Medical Honor Society. He was inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Society and served as president of the LSU Undergraduate Surgical Society.


He graduated from LSU Medical School in 1954, receiving a doctor of medicine degree and the Urban Maes Memorial Award, given to the student exhibiting the most promise for future accomplishments in the field of clinical medicine and surgery. Upon graduation, Dr. Sudduth spent five years in post-graduate surgical training and went on to serve as chief resident surgeon at Charity Hospital in New Orleans in 1958-59.

Dr. Sudduth returned to Abbeville in 1959 to open his private medical practice, which he maintained until his retirement in 1988.

Dr. Sudduth was a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery; a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the Southeastern Surgical Congress and the Surgical Association of Louisiana, where he also served as president; and president of the James D. Rives State Surgical Society.


His professional distinctions also include the past presidency of the Vermilion Parish Medical Society and serving as the first chief of staff and, later, chief of surgery at Abbeville General Hospital. Dr. Sudduth also held the position of clinical assistant professor of surgery at the LSU Department of Surgery and consulting surgeon at University Medical Center. In addition, he received a biographical listing in Who’s Who in American Medicine.

Dr. Sudduth was a past president of the Abbeville Kiwanis Club, an organizing director of Gulf Coast Bank, and past president of the Louisiana Tarpon Club. He was inducted into the Abbeville High School Athletics Hall of Fame in 1986.


He is survived by his wife, Lois Allen Sudduth, originally from Biloxi, Mississippi; his four children, Cindy Sudduth Campisi, Jan Sudduth Judice, Richard Scott Sudduth and Patti Sudduth Domengeaux; and eight grandchildren, Leslie Campisi, Lauren Campisi, Lia Campisi, Michele Domengeaux, Meredith Domengeaux, James Domengeaux, Emily Sudduth and Hunter Sudduth.

The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Sudduth’s care givers -- Toppie, Veronica, Lucy, Dee and Priscilla -- and also would like to thank Pat Doré for all of his assistance.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Abbeville, 209 S. St. Charles Street, on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m.; Wednesday, September 1, 2010 from 8:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. when the procession will depart for the church.
