Georgette (Jo) Veazey Shields Nunez

Kaplan—A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 PM on February 3, 2024 at St. Anne Catholic Church in Forked Island, Louisiana honoring the life of Georgette Nunez, 91, who died peacefully on January 27, 2024, at Oak Park Assisted Living in Slidell, Louisiana. She will be laid to rest at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Forked Island, Louisiana with Father Suresh Mathangi officiating the services.

Georgette was born on October 2, 1932 and raised in Pecan Island, Louisiana.  She then moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1948 and spent the next 28 years raising her children there. Georgette was known as a care giver. Taking care of the elderly was her occupation and specialty. In 1975 she moved to Lafayette to take care of her father. She ended up settling in Lafayette, Louisiana for the next twenty years. Grams was affectionately known by her grandchildren for her delicious chocolate chip cookies and Blue Bell ice cream runs. After her marriage to Leverson Nunez she moved to Forked Island, Louisiana. Following Leverson’s death she moved to Slidell, Louisiana and lived nearly 10 years at Oak Park Assisted Living Facility. She was known there as a genuinely pleasant and happy person and also a fierce bingo competitor.

She is survived by her children, Charlotte Gaar (David), Jim Shields (Margaret), John Shields (Margaret); and grandchildren, Ira Gaar (Brandee), Noah Gaar, Laini Gaar, Micah Gaar (Ivette), Jason Shields, Matthew Shields (Megan), Eric Shields (Irene), Nancy Eunice (Michael), Gretta Roberts (Kurt), Julie Hess.  She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Emma Gaar, Hannah Gaar, Lilly Gaar, Noah Shields, Cooper Shields, Jack Shields, Hannah Shields, Evelyn Shields, Lillian Roberts, Finn Hess, Ruth Eunice, and Gabe Gaar.

Georgette is preceded in death by her husband, Leverson Nunez; her father, John Andrew Veazey and her mother, Julienne Dyson Veazey; her siblings, Henrietta Verret, Jarrell Veazey, Emery Veazey, Brunette Ockman, Carson Veazey, Alberteen Adamson, and John Veazey.

The family request that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home in Kaplan, 300 N. Eleazar Avenue, on Saturday February 3, 2024 from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM when the procession will depart for St. Anne Catholic Church. A rosary will be prayed at 11:00 AM.
