Hazel Durke Broussard

July 12, 1925 — January 30, 2023

Abbeville— Hazel Durke Broussard, 97, passed away peacefully in her home on Monday, January 30, 2023.  A scripture service honoring her life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 4th, 2023 at Vincent Funeral Home in Abbeville, the Reverend John Vining, former pastor of Abbeville United Methodist Church, will be conducting the service. She will be laid to rest at Graceland Cemetery.

Hazel, the daughter of the late Ashby and Viola Richardson Durke, was born July 12, 1925, in Abbeville, LA.  She and her husband, Dudley Broussard, married on April 6, 1946 and relocated to Baton Rouge where they raised their beloved son, Billy Wayne.  After spending 35 years in Baton Rouge, they returned to Abbeville which allowed them to be closer to family and friends.

Hazel enjoyed traveling, shopping, gardening, cooking, playing cards with family and the occasional casino trip. Those closest to Hazel know how much she loved her morning cappuccino, brightly colored flowers in her garden and listening to gospel music on her record player.

She is survived by a many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

She was preceded in death by her son, Billy Wayne Broussard; her husband, Dudley Broussard; her parents, Ashby and Viola Richardson Durke; brother, Creighton Durke; and three sisters, Ethel Vincent, Beatrice Frederick, and Ruby Montet.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home in Abbeville, 209 S. St. Charles Street, on Saturday, February 4, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. till time of services at 2:00 p.m.

The family would like to thank Hazel’s long-time caregivers, Louella Collins, Koatrina Levine and Terri Levine for their endless compassionate care.  We’d also like to thank Arlane Scott, Shaylan Conner, Keevona Collins, Destiny Milton, Penny Mouton, Dr. Kerry Schexnaider of Maurice, the staff at Concepts of Care and Traditions Health for their excellent care and support.

We will miss the sweet sound of her voice saying hello when answering the phone and the way she would always answer the question “How are you Aunt Hazel, fine thank you”.
