John Edwin Hebert

October 25, 1930 — December 2, 2023

Abbeville—A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:30 PM on Saturday, December  9, 2023  at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church honoring the life of John Edwin “Ed” Hebert, 93, who died Saturday, December 2, 2023 at Southwest Louisiana War Veterans Home in Jennings, LA.  He will be laid to rest at the Hebert Family Cemetery with Reverend Louis J. Richard  officiating the services.    Con Celebrant will be Reverend Brad Guillory.

Ed was born to Leonie Lachaussee Hebert and Clemille Hebert on October 25, 1930. He graduated from University of Southwestern Louisiana and did graduate work at the University of Indiana in Bloomington, Indiana. He served in the US Air Force from 1948 to 1952 during the Korean War and was stationed in Japan for 13 months and served in Korea for 11 months. Ed returned home to work for the Louisiana State Department of Labor for 27 years until he retired in 1984.

Ed was a member of the Knights of Columbus for many years and served as an archivist at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church.  He was well known as a grower/hybridizer of daylilies and shared his knowledge and bulbs with his family and friends. He generously gave his time and wisdom and advice to anyone in need and will be missed by all.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Marie Gaspard Hebert; nephews and nieces, Michael Butcher (Dottie), Kathryn Butcher (widow of nephew Ronald), Tony Butcher (Rosemary), Dina Gannon (Billy), Johnny Hebert (Elizabeth), Sister Elizabeth Hebert, Donna Broussard (Danny), Randall Perrin (widower of Nina), Jamie Buetow (Mark), Bonnie Trahan (widow of Henry Trahan), Debbie Cameron, Greg Cameron (Angel); and stepchildren, Charlotte Dore and Marcus Elizondo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clemille and Leonie Hebert; siblings, Cecile Butcher, David Hebert, Jeanne Bernard, and Helen Cameron Fortier; nieces, Lorraine Hebert, Patricia Butcher, Kathryn Austin and Nina Perrin; nephews, Ronald Butcher, Richard Cameron, and William Cameron.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, 300 Pere Megret St., Abbeville, LA, on Saturday, December 9, 2023, from 11:00 AM until 12:00 PM with a rosary being prayed at noon, funeral mass will follow at 12:30 PM.

The family would like to extend heartfelt appreciation to the kind staff at the Southwest Louisiana Veteran’s Home and to Lamm Hospice in Jennings, LA.  The staff and their service to their patients was remarkable and truly appreciated and was a blessing to “Mr. John” and his family.
