Joyce Mae Mathiew

November 9, 1929 — June 5, 2023

Kaplan—A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, June  7, 2023 at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church honoring the life of Joyce Mae Mathiew, 93, who died Monday, June 5, 2023 at Eastridge Nursing Center.  She will be laid to rest at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Cemetery with Reverend Mark Miley officiating the services.

“Mrs. Joyce” as she was affectionately known, would give the shirt off her back to a stranger. She was a devout Catholic, a parishioner of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Kaplan. It was important to her that all her kids received a Catholic school upbringing, as all her children attended Maltrait. Ms. Joyce was also a faithful member of the Catholic Daughters. In her youth she worked at the Joy Theater in Kaplan. She also helped run the family business, Chin’s Full Service Gas Station, for many years. Mrs. Joyce was known for her cooking and baking skills. Her fried chicken was heavenly and her cakes were legendary. When her girls were younger she was involved with the local Girl Scout troop. From 1987-1998, Mrs. Joyce served as chairman of the Ministries of the Bereaved program, cooking food for grieving families. In 1991 she was named Citizen of the Year by the Woodmen of the World. Her whole life was spent helping others. She will be missed.

She is survived by her two sons, David Mathiew and his wife, Linda of Nunez and Gabe Mathiew and his wife, Britt of Kaplan; her two daughters, Sara LeBlanc of Nunez and Brenda Schexnayder of Kaplan; her sister-in-law, Naomie Simon; her 14 grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Eutis “Chin” Mathiew; her parents, Odeon Guidry and the former Theresa Lemaire; her sister, Hazel Mayard; and brother, Jay Guidry; her sisters-in-law, Eunice LeBlanc and Eliza Boulet; and son-in-law David LeBlanc.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Kaplan, 300 N. Eleazar Ave., on Wednesday, June 7, 2023 from 9:00 AM until the procession departs for the church at 1:45 PM with a rosary being prayed at 10:30 AM.
