Mary Lou P. Trahan

January 31, 1933 — November 3, 2019

Kaplan—A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November  9, 2019 at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church with Reverend Mark Miley officiating the services honoring the life of Mary Lou Porter Trahan, 86, who passed away peacefully, Sunday, November 3, 2019.

Our beloved, devoted, and generous mother and grandmother has entered the Kingdom of Heaven to join her two beloved sons, Mason Paul Trahan and Reese Louis Trahan; a grandson, Harvey Duplantis, Jr., her parents, St. Julien Porter and the former Alma Callahan; and other predeceased family members.  Mary was born on January 31, 1933, the only child of the late St. Julien Porter and Alma Callahan Porter.  In her final weeks, Mary was surrounded by the love of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, sharing hugs, stories, and laughter.  Mary grew up in Kaplan, LA, and worked at Kaplan Healthcare Center as a Certified Nurse Assistant. She excelled in this career, which lasted more than 25 years through the stages of a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.  Upon retiring from Kaplan Healthcare Center, she began caring for her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  She was happiest when surrounded by those she loved.

She is survived by her only daughter, Geraldine Trahan Duplantis and her husband, Harvey of Kaplan, LA; two sons, James Michael Trahan and his wife, Valérie of Bouloupari, New Caledonia and Weston Jean Trahan of Walker, LA; her six grandchildren, Michelle Burke and her husband, Joseph of Madisonville, LA, Jennifer Trahan Charpentier and her husband, Anthony of Duson, LA, Jill Trahan of Nouméa, New Caledonia, Jess Trahan of Bouloupari, New Caledonia, Nancy Simon and her partner, Christy Gaspard of Kaplan, LA, and Kevin Duplantis of Abbeville, LA;  her nine great grandchildren, Madeleine, Meaghan, Molli, Malaina, Jayla, Austin, Allie, Kyle and Elisabeth.

Mary was a dedicated member of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Kaplan, LA.  She was also a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and Kaplan AARP Group.  She was always looking for a way to give back to the community.  Throughout the years, Mary was still hard-working and striving to care for others.  In her retirement, Mary enjoyed her time with dear friends at social events, including bingo, drinking coffee and having luncheons with her friends, playing cards and Monopoly with her grandchildren.  Mary enjoyed shopping with her favorite granddaughter and the occasional trip to the casino with her son-in-law, who always made sure she stuck to her limit. She also enjoyed family time, eating out with her fabulous daughter and son-in-law.  If there is one thing Mary really enjoyed doing above all, it was taking care of others and spending time with her family.

Serving as pallbearers will be Harvey Duplantis, Joseph Burke, Steve Perry, Kim Duplantis, James Trahan, and Weston Trahan.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed at Vincent Funeral Home - Kaplan, 300 N. Eleazar Ave., on Friday, November  8, 2019 from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM with a rosary being prayed at 7:00 PM; Saturday, November 9, 2019 from 8:00 AM until the procession departs for the church at 10:45 AM. Interment will be at the Kaplan Cemetery.

The family of Mary Trahan would like to thank the staff of Kaplan Healthcare Center, Abrom Kaplan Memorial Hospital, Lafayette General Medical Center, and Hospice of Acadiana for the exceptional, compassionate care she received leading up to her transition to eternal life.   She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
